763522 2009-04-09 05:28:00 As in this? ( . wdc . com/en/products/products . asp?DriveID=572" target="_blank">www . wdc . com)

As I'm looking at building an HTPC I thought it was awesome until I discovered it has no NIC :waughh:

As if you're going to copy a blu-ray etc to a USB memory stick every time you want to watch it . . . . .

That's just retarded . :annoyed:

Not sure I need it connected to the network, my portable HDD should do the trick.

763525 2009-04-09 07:59:00 There are many devices similar to this on trademe.

I had one previously and it does everything the WD TV does.

763526 2009-04-09 11:34:00 I have one of those babies and I'v been quite impressed with it! Wasn't compatible with any of my USB flash drives but got it working with a spare 2.5" laptop drive (housed in an external enclosure). Was glad that I didnt have to buy a Western Digital manufactured external hard drive (as recommended by WD).

Picture quality is great and i'm thinking of pairing it with a cheapo 22" LCD monitor hung on the wall as a super-sized digital photo frame. Have found it useful when kids want to watch a dvd in their rooms - they can just copy it from the Media Centre PC and take this tiny little box and a small HDD enclosure away.

Supports the playing of ripped DVDs - wouldn't use it as my main digital media adaptor given that it has no ethernet-wi-fi capability but for the price I got it ($250) that's to be expected.

Firmware needs some working on as there's the odd quirk on the settings menu -- for example you cant switch to HDMI output until you plug in a composie cable and access the video settings menu.

Hope that helps

763527 2009-04-09 14:41:00 i dont have one of these boxes you speak of but my setup involves a video/analogue capture card a network and a slave PC attached to a 37" LCD used to play video captures, the slave does have the limitation of windows 98 and any video that is a bit big (~4+ gig) only 3 minutes of it plays but you need to capture about 4 - 8 hours for that to happen but for what i use it for; a slightly overkill VCR with 500 gig "tape" so i use it to store the odd movie as well, in 513kb/ps mpeg (VCDpal setting according to the TV card utility) makes a slightly crude media centre and movies at the click of a mouse williamF (115)
