| 763495 | 2009-04-09 05:10:00 | ok...i got this very big problem.. let me explain everything first: i have a laptop: toshiba satellite m300..OS:VISTA Home Premium SP1: Updates: i dont do automatic update, waste of HD space: Antivirus: KAV7 Firewall: None (even the built in is disabled) i also have a desktop computer: OS: Windows XP SP2 or 3, i dont remember..Updates: No automatic updating also..Antivirus: KAV8..Firewall: Built in only...Internet Connection: Cable (i dont really know what type is is because the internet is mainly from a receiver (3g or something from cell sites) on my rooftop and then a cable to my pc..(they call it SMART BRO..i really dont know why but its a wireless broadband as what i have heard from them..) PROBLEM: I cant get to my internet connection to work with my notebook. I googled this problem, they call it as the unidentified network problem. i also heard that this is cause by the recent SP1 on vista. i suspected the SP1 because my old notebook (Vista Basic no SP1) was able to connect immediately.. also i tried the registry solutions given by microsoft where you edit the flag or something..but i doesnt work.. tried having values in the MAC Address..wont work either.. unistalling the network cards..wontt work either.. updating the network card (marvell yukon 88e8040t pci fast ethernet (updated version is 10.66.4.3) but it wont work either.. the cold boot appoarch..nope..it doesnt work.. So, what should i do now? i know techies in this place can resolve this..i mean, they always do..Thanks for the fast replies..:thanks |

Other way around - XP uses MSHOME and Vista/Windows7 use Workgroup. In Vista, click start, type in CMD - click the cmd in the results, once open type in ipconfig <press enter> See what your IP address is, if it starts with 169. The you are not getting an IP address from the router, post back what the IP address is. Have you let the IP address range from the router through on the firewall ?? |

If you are not connecting Via a modem or Router then HOW are you trying - the setup ( or the way its written) is completely wrong, and makes no sence. You say no firewalls ?? yet in the very first post KAV7 Firewall: None If its installed, even disabled it often is working. |

| 763504 | 2009-04-09 08:52:00 | OK I see by your user name you are in the Philippines. Never seen one of those "receivers" here in NZ- not like that any way. Working backwards - the Firewall I was referring to was the KAV7 Firewall you mentioned in the original post - some times even if they are disabled they are still blocking. If its installed , uninstall it. once its uninstalled, open the cmd again see if the ping command Blam posted gets a response ( reply) or times out. Also try this - go into the control panel, network and Sharing, on the left, Manage network connections, right click your local Area connection/Properties - in the list, untick TCP/IPV6. Reboot and see if the internet works. Edited: One thing that also does work sometimes - while at the local Area connection - right click it, select DISABLE - reboot then go back in and ENABLE it - this sometimes gives it a "kick" to get going again. make sure the default gateway and IP address are set to what ever they are. |
