763195 2009-04-08 10:58:00 Hey!

Hypothetically speaking, if I bought my own box and wanted to put it somewhere with decent internet access (ie. not a home broadband connection) would there be a place I can keep it? Rent some space somewhere. I tried doing some research but didn't come up with much.

Thanks,

Gregor

763196 2009-04-08 11:03:00 Hypothetically Answering - ;) you can - what sort of server hosting are you Hypothetically wanting to do ?

I host my own web site from one of my own servers - (well it will be once I get the site finished) its currently not "officially live" but can currently be accessed by an IP address, instead of a domain name.

Do a search for "Co-Location" providers . Basically, they rent you space in their datacentre, and provide power, internet connection, and (physical) security . Which part of the country are you in?

763199 2009-04-09 03:02:00 Note though that you'll need a server designed for rack mounting - if you want to host a standard tower, or some other weird shape, it'll cost you a LOT - rackspace is charged by height in 1.75" (1U) increments. Erayd (23)

Yes, and I wouldn't recommend the cheap server hosting providers, as you pay for what you get. One of the cheap ones in Auckland has had major problems over the last few days, which has caused a lot of downtime for their customers.

You were affected too huh? :(

763202 2009-04-09 04:48:00 in my experience, if you have a reliable broadband router, set up port forwarding for port 80 etc or whatever your using for the HTML, ftp, and VNC port(s) etc and get a domain name from no-ip or something (free or paid depending on what you want in the way of suffixes) i have a dynalink basic broadband router and it rarely (if ever) needed rebooting, and only once or twice has it been recently turned off since after i configed it due to the UPS going flat in a power outage and when the broadband service was out for a bit williamF (115)

If you are referring to the same company (begins with H & D), it didn't affect me pesonally, but one of my clients was, and they were not impressed by the companies explaination and the way they were handled. It seems to be quite an unprofessional outfit from what I heard, as they have quite a few bad reviews around the net.

That depends a lot on what WarNox wants to do with his/her server. For non-critical stuff like what you're doing, hosting it yourself is fine (though is probably against your ISP's service agreement - you should check the fine print carefully).

If your website is business-critical, it needs to be in a datacentre with appropriate power redundancy, and network redundancy, so that if the power goes out, and/or one ISP's network goes down, your site won't be affected. For some organisations, even a few minutes of downtime is completely unacceptable, and would have a significant impact on their clients.
