762925 2009-04-07 06:53:00 Has anyone had any problems burning Verbatim DVD-R discs? My Pioneer DVD writer has just burnt nearly half a dozen coasters, the first I have ever had on this drive, either DVDs or CDs. Thought they were supposed to be a good brand, too. :( FoxyMX (5)
762926 2009-04-07 06:55:00 I've never had any problems with them before. Where were they made? Zippity (58)

762928 2009-04-07 07:34:00 I'm curious to see which company actually manufactured those discs.

Sure, your first reaction is to reply Verbatim!
Sorry, but most major suppliers actually have other companies making their discs, and then Verbatim and many others simply repackage them under their own name, with the price jacked up to match.

There is a code burnt onto all blank media, the manufacturer ID code. You need special software to read it (try DVD Intentifier). The code block is very short, and might not mean much to you, but will guide you towards what to google in order to research the general quality of the manufacturers media.

There's some terrible discs being sold under trusted names. Most of the recordable DVD media sold in NZ is 3rd rate compared to what is available in the US and Europe.

IF the media code shows "Princo" or "CMC" then you've got the worst #$%& around.

762929 2009-04-07 07:34:00 No Problems with them lately - Did have one batch a long time ago that didn't like to be burnt at top speed - reduced the burn speed and they went fine. wainuitech (129)
762930 2009-04-07 08:34:00 I have not had any problems with Verbatim, it is what I use most of the time when I don't have any Ritek ones here. I normally aim for first or second class media when I can.

Take a look at www.digitalfaq.com

Try checking the firmware on your burner for an update, if none available burn at a slower speed or slowest speed and see how that goes.

762931 2009-04-07 09:22:00 Have a look at http://club.cdfreaks.com/

The best Verbatim discs are made in India or Taiwan.

I have used Princo and other "so called" cheap brands and have had no bad experiences.

The secret is to burn at half the advertised maximum burn speed. :)
