586706 2007-08-31 23:13:00 Have a Kenwood XD8560, over seven years old, which is still very good (like that can put in five discs and random play on all).

The speakers have been in the sun and shedding their outer skin. Looks bad.

One retailer has a pair of Wharfedale speakers Crystal 40B reduced to $300 (50% reduction)

Our current ones are
Enclosure Bass-reflex type
Speaker config 3-way system
Woofer 160mm cone type
Tweeter 65mm cone type
Tweeter 25mm cone type
Impedance 6
Max input level 80W
Frequency response 43Hz - 20,000Hz

Would I -
(1) Be getting better speakers by buying Wharfedale ?? (even I know that they are a very good brand).
(2) Be going overboard in spending $300 on a system over seven years old ??

Any other comments to someone to whom this may as well all be Greek !!

586707 2007-09-01 00:11:00 A whole new system would cost more than $300 i'm sure, and if you think your Kenwood is good then why bother?

Most of my Hi-Fi equipment is also quite old but it all works fine

I'm not an expert on audio and speakers, nor do I care for the best quality but I believe Wharfedale are pretty good, I guess it all comes down to how much you want to pay/what your views are on audio quality.

586708 2007-09-01 02:33:00 Have a look on Trade me for Speakers. Sometimes you can find nice ones on there. Personally I don't like Wharfedale. Look at KEF, Mission, Image, Energy.

or if you really want the 40B see here

Nothing wrong with Wharfdale speakers, we have some although they are probably also about 7 years old. The current ones are very good. It just depends on how much you value listening to quality sounds - depending on what you end up doing. Denon (English brand) are also very good.

586710 2007-09-01 04:45:00 Yes Wharfdale are good speakers, but the end decision is up to you. Listening is very subjective. What speakers sound good to you may sound terrible to some one else. :) Trev (427)
586711 2007-09-01 05:39:00 Thanks for your comments guys !

Well we were worried that they might all have gone so we went into Harvey Norman and bought them. Just got in on time - we got them for $200 (less than I posted) -- reduced from $699 - a terrific buy.

Mrs Misty said that I would probably notice the difference but she probably would not. Well, much to her surprise, she has noticed a startling difference. We hear much more detail and a much richer sound.
Absolutely terrific !!! Someone up there must be looking after us.

Thanks again

PS - Today Mrs Misty has been listening to ENZO (ie - Crowded House and the NZ Symphony Orchestra together - "an oldie"). We have both been listening to Sheryl Crow and Fleetwood Mac (FM is an old band but recently "discovered" by us).

586713 2007-09-01 05:45:00 And be sure to buy those really really expensive thick cables and if you don't notice any difference, never admit it and tell your friends they must be deaf if they can't tell how "good" it sounds. JackStraw (6573)

586715 2007-09-02 00:04:00 probably shouldn't start down this road but....

The net effect of things like gold connectors, oxygen free monster cables, etc is twofold:
1. it hurts your wallet bigtime
2. there is a small increase in volume

Louder sounds better - simple, turn the knob a little and enjoy the benefits for free. Gold does theoretically last longer though I've yet to have a stereo cable fail on me from age.

It may be possible that under Ideal listening conditions in an acoustically designed room with high end audio equipment you could hear the tiniest of improvements with expensive cables - but I doubt it.

I'm also majorly sceptical of people who claim they can hear quantising distortion, what does that sound like exactly? - more likely they are hearing some other difference and labelling it quantising.

Anyway I digress.... congrats on the speakers sounds like you're happy with them, wish I'd known about them at $200 !
