This is simply stunning. It's callled Holophonics.

Holophonics: 3D Sound for headphones

This is one of those inventions that, if accepted, could revolutionate the way
in wich we see or, better to say, HEAR, movies and TV at home.

It is Holophonics, a technique that imitates the way in wich the brain
interprets and processes the sound, and the distances in between different
sounds. This is called binaural sound.

To achieve this effect, the sequences of each ear are recorded independently,
using a "dummy head" with 2 microphones, one in each ear. Then, both recordings
are combined using an algorithm called Cetera, and the result is emited by one
channel only.

With this technique, with a simple pair of headphones a surrounding and
localized efect is achieved, asi if we were using a home theater instead.

I ripped my headphones off numerous times when listening. I truly can't describe it. And no, it's not one of those "get close to the screen, then i scare the crap out of you" things.

This one is really really good. When the sissors come out, you start to sweat!
