| 586173 | 2007-08-30 02:35:00 | From the city that hates asians, blacks, and gays comes the latest in redneck vigilantism . You can bet that at the forefront of the incidents would be the Christchurch Press if they had their way, unfortuatly for them they are not allowed to name the poor family . A series of attacks on a Christchurch couple's vehicles, including a punctured brake hose and numerous shattered windows, has left them at breaking point . The incidents, which began 11 months ago - the latest occurred this month - have "terrified" the professional couple's four children, aged four to 12 . The man and woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, suspect the vandalism is associated with a spurious rape complaint made against the man tw and a half years ago . The complainant, a female family member, who has a psychiatric condition, failed to turn up to court three times and the proceedings were halted . But not before the couple sold their house and uprooted their children from the outskirts of Christchurch to a two-bedroom rental flat in the city to pay for an estimated $150,000 in case-related costs . After their mechanic found the brake hose had been deliberately punctured in April they notified the police . The file was passed to the Sydenham Police after being investigated by Hornby CIB . Community Constable Deb Smalley, who received the file on Monday, said she would be in touch with the couple this week . "My suggestion to them would be to stop parking (the vehicle) on the street or get an alarm . " The latest incident occurred just a week after another window was smashed while the couple's vehicle was parked outside their home during the early hours of the morning . Nothing was stolen in the last two incidents but in two of the six earlier incidents, CDs and personal items were stolen . "It's just so frustrating," the woman said . Her world was turned upside down in May 2005 when their son, aged eight at the time, answered the door to the police one morning . They took her husband away for questioning and arrested him before releasing him on bail later that day, but denying him contact with his wife and children . The man, who has always proclaimed his innocence, was due to appear in the Christchurch District Court to defend the charges in August 2006 . However, the complainant did not front up, nor did she turn up to the Family Court, where the rape case was brought in November 2006, following the collapse of the district court trial . In February this year, the man appeared in the district court on other minor sexual charges, which were again dismissed when the complainant failed to appear . "It was just awful," the woman said of the first trial . "The jurors were there, my husband was ready and we were told there would be no trial . "By then the damage was already done and for them to pull out again was really frustrating . " The couple wonder why the police pressed charges when there was no tangible evidence to suggest the man had committed rape . He was able to provide a compelling alibi supported by evidence gleaned from the police seizure of computer hard drives . Furthermore, DNA tests, both here and overseas, were negative . "It was her word against his, only he had actual evidence . " The family member's allegation came to light while she was receiving repressed memory treatment by a private psychologist in conjunction with staff at Hillmorton Hospital . Allegations haven't only been fired at the man . Earlier this year, the wife was issued with a trespass order and warned for criminal harassment after being accused of leaving a malicious note in the family member's letterbox . The woman denied the allegation . The couple's children have also been dragged into the saga with the family member accusing the father of abusing them . Child, Youth and Family interviewed the woman and the children in July 2005 and again briefly in 2006 before closing the file . "They adore their dad and are angry he was accused of abusing them . " The allegations have torn the couple's wider family apart with gatherings a thing of the past . "We were once a close family . " The couple have tried to recoup their costs through the court but have been unsuccessful . The worst part was that her husband had not been able to prove his innocence before the court, she said . "That's probably more frustrating . It's hard because we've got nothing resolved . " The couple are trying to rebuild their lives . The wife had decided to speak out in an attempt to prevent another family going through the same trauma . "We don't want the police to do this to another family . If we can stop somebody else going through this then it has not been a waste . " They are angry and upset that they are still being hounded, this time with vandalism . "We don't want to be bullied from another house . " Detective Senior Sergeant Grant Wormald said the case went through a depositions hearing and the court felt there was sufficient evidence to proceed . "It was only because of the situation with the complainant that it didn't proceed . " . co . nz/thepress/4182865a24035 . html" target="_blank">stuff . co . nz |

| 586174 | 2007-08-30 03:01:00 | Well in defence of my fair city I'd hardly say it was redneck vigilantism. More like the actions of a lone nutter. | olwyn (8088) | ||

| 586181 | 2007-09-01 05:09:00 | Yeah right some clownse have been watching too many american movies. If you puncture a brake line on any car from 1980 on you still have either the front or back and a warning light comes on. Although if you are stupid enough to keep driving with brake caption on you deserve to die. tedheath |
