585986 2007-08-30 00:12:00 Didn't we used to have "Town Milk Suppliers"? Who sold all their milk to local milk suppliers? Or did they all opt for the bigger profit overseas option? PJ Poppa John (284)
585987 2007-08-30 01:16:00 There is no excuse for milk to be priced that high! It is greed, greed of the little shop owner, I bet coffee is $7 and bread $4.50 GRRRRR

We own a small beachside shop, we are 80ks from the nearest supermarket.
We sell milk, 2l for $4.
That's really good on ya. Considering the enormous payouts that Fronterra are about to pay to farmers, there's no excuse for the extraordinary prices that are charged for basics like milk these days.

If they have any brains they did.

The dairy companies absorbed the town milk processors, so their suppliers went to the company concerned. Now, Fonterra advertises for suppliers, in favourable areas to supply milk for local consumption through the winter months, i.e. June-August. A premium is paid for this supply, and it would need to be, considering the extra costs that it takes to keep cows in milk through a slow -nil grass growth period and the anti-social aspect of going to the shed through the winter probably deserves an extra reward. But, it's all got to stack up financially. Personally, I wouldn't be interested; spring calving, autumn calving, it'd never end.

It wasn't one of the budget milks which is what I normally get at a supermarket( which by the way tastes a lot better), it's just we don't have much choice out here.
The shop owner seems to be aiming for the weekenders or the desperate

585994 2007-08-30 06:07:00 Lots of stuff (lamb, beef, pork & salmon fish, for example) are more expensive in NZ than Singapore (I was there last year) although those are our main exports. Sometimes, I just don't see the logic behind it other than the businesses in NZ have extremely high markups.

Few years ago I bought a Reven (Aussie made) weather seal for doors from Malaysia at about NZ $12.50 , and the same item (exactly the same) was sold in NZ at $27.00. The freight costs from Australia to NZ is certainly higher than that of Malaysia

Well, that's the way it is, whether you like it or not.
