763154 2009-04-08 08:21:00 I doubt if your security experience counts for a lot considering you are only 14 years old.

Do you realize we have been discussing this topic on this forum when you were just starting primary school.

It is probably fine for you as you know your way around computers but so many people are completely ignorant about computer security and they read these posts and act on the advice given and to say that it is a myth that you need a software firewall can give people a false sense of security.

Most people here know who I am but for your benefit I use a Mac
What I don't have to do is waste hours updating and scanning for viruses, trojans and spyware.

I'm not the only person that thinks this. And I still stick with my original statement that a third party FW is required for the typical end user.

And PLEASE don't start the Mac doesn't get viruses and is SOOO much better than windows, I NEVER waste ny time scanning for viruses!!!

No.

I don't believe for the average user that it is overkill to have a software firewall installed. Neither the windows firewall or the router one protects against outbound traffic and the more protection you have the better considering the way some non technical people operate their computers. Totally agree Safari - I have seen it way to many times to even try to count, the number of times people have been hacked, or infections get in and the inbuilt firewalls and routers dont do a damn thing - a software firewall should stop outbound traffic as well work much better.

Many people dont know that the inbuilt firewall in both XP and Vista can block out going traffic - MS have left this turned off by default.

One comment that I have seen a lot of, all along the same lines is this:
I can only venture a guess that Microsoft might of been reluctant to make this feature easy to find, since they may have felt that the average user would of struggled getting it to work properly. read that as the average user has no idea how to use most security software, they would allow things that should be blocked, and block things that can be allowed - then wonder why things dont work.

IMO you don't need a 3rd party firewall. The Windows one is just fine.

763157 2009-04-08 09:55:00 Avast Pro with Comodo.

But it is overkill to have a software firewall really. Windows' bult in one+router firewall is sufficient.
Don't bother getting Avast! Pro, if you're going to buy an AV then get Nod32.

Comodo is only average but better than none, the windows one is rubbish. Yes you do want a decent firewall other than a Router.

Avast Pro OR Nod32.

There are several Anti Virus Apps for Mac just as there are for Windows. Even Norton make one, not that I would recommend anyone actually used a Norton product.

763158 2009-04-08 10:06:00 IMO you don't need a 3rd party firewall. The Windows one is just fine. I disagree - heres a classic example - a customer of mine asked me to remove the comodo firewall because they didn't know what some of the prompts were.

I removed it and only left the windows one running- but did warn that there could be trouble - well within a week their PC had been infiltrated because of some program the kids downloaded using Limewire - there had been a program installed and someone was having a field day altering items in the PC. (just playing moving files etc.)

I disconnected the internet, reinstalled Comodo - reconnected the internet, and instantly a warning popped up that I saw as the problem program.

Cleaned out the PC- NOW they have learnt how to actually use the firewall there has been no more problems.

763159 2009-04-08 20:26:00 That I agree on - if they're using P2P, they need a 3rd party one, otherwise the Windows one is fine. pcuser42 (130)

How does that feel? A bit high and mighty up there on that mac of yours.

Ive never used third party firewalls and ive browsed the most hardcore dodgiest porn sites in existance and came away fine (even more than that actually :banana )

90% of the people I know with computers (which is quite a few because I am insanely popular) dont use them either, majority of home users check emails and use trademe, if you need a third party firewall then you should consider buying software instead of pirating

Good to see I'm not alone here on these thoughts.

I still stick with my original statement, I find firewalls are overkill.

I had smoothwall set up for a while, until I realised I was wasting a PC...

763162 2009-04-09 08:24:00 So are you saying that all the PC's I get through the workshops that DONT have firewalls are because the owners are simply unlucky - Utter CRAP!!
At leat 90% of those PC's also are running through routers.

Just about all that have infections or god knows what else NEVER had a firewall aprt from teh windows one - those that do have firewalls very rarely have those problems.

OH WAIT - I only deal with this for a living and see it almost every day.
wainuitech (129)
763163 2009-04-09 08:37:00 You deal with the small percent of people who have problems, if everyone not running firewalls had a problem youd know about it... hueybot3000 (3646)
