585966 2007-08-29 12:13:00 Aussie milk is revolting, But then, all dairy products in Aussie are revolting.

I moved home for no other reason then the fact I like to skull a tall glass of ice cold milk everyday.

and i don't blame you either; aussie milk is horrible:yuck:

585967 2007-08-29 12:54:00 The weird thing is, is their any reason to justify our high milk price? I mean seriously, the cockys are not hard done by, except maybe a few around the snowy areas... rob_on_guitar (4196)
585968 2007-08-29 13:05:00 I agree rob. Why are prices in NZ so high I have always wondered? I know we export a LOT but with one of the highest ration of cattle to humans, we surely deserve cheaper prices. Makes India look cheap and we don't export that much as most of our production is for internal consumption.

BTW, dairy products in India seem to taste better as well. As in more flavour, texture and it just feels creamier for some reason.

585969 2007-08-29 13:06:00 same for lamb; it's a major export yet it costs so damn much

and plywood; i've seen crates/packaging plywood from aussie with spotless, top quality wood used, while the best stuff you can get here is (relatively) riddled with knots

probably less processing...

i remember an american girlfriend i had a while back couldn't stand NZ dairy products; her and her sister thought they were way too creamy.

i made the mistake of pouring myself a glass of their milk once - turns out they water it down about 50/50 so they can drink it:horrified

It's called good business.
You don't sell something cheap if you can get a better price elsewhere.

Milk costs so much because it's getting high export prices.
And because there's no glut, we're having to pay the normal commodity price -including a recent big increase.
That's the local downside of a good export market.
Watch cheese prices rise also...
.
That's why lamb is expensive.
And why the average NZ family hasn't bought crayfish since our fishermen developed ways of flying them live to overseas restaurants at luxury prices.

585973 2007-08-29 15:58:00 Well, how far will they push it? Would we have to start importing to bring the price down? Sounds like they found a way to screw us and are gonna 'milk' it for all its worth. rob_on_guitar (4196)
585974 2007-08-29 18:47:00 I saw in the paper the other day that they were complaining about the price of milk in Germany $ 2.00 a litre) because a lot of their milk was going to China !

Funny isn't it we have dear meat, milk, cheese and fish because we export it and get good prices so we (local) have to pay the same.

Yet in Arab states where they export most of their oil petrol is dirt cheap ! !

The weird thing is, is their any reason to justify our high milk price? I remember the last time Fonterra blamed the drought in OZ which lead to a decreased overseas supply, so therefore demand for NZ milk had risen substantially. I still don't understand why that pushes local prices up, it should just push up export prices
