764447 2009-04-13 01:51:00 Does turning an LCD screen off prolong it's life?

I'm not so much thinking about internal workings so much as the LCD's themselves. Do LCD's have a limited life-span which is extended by switching the monitor into standby (or off) when not in use?

764448 2009-04-13 02:19:00 Technically speaking yes it would.

My LCD has a sticker up top which says its rated at 50,000 hours. Thats over 5 years with it being on 24/7.

Turn it off at night, or power off after 30 mins not in use perhaps, and you'll save power and have an LCD that'll last a lifetime ;)

764449 2009-04-13 03:05:00 Depends how long you leave it off for.

Turning it on and off too much in too short a time could also shorten the life

764450 2009-04-13 07:38:00 Wouldn't turning the LCD screen on and off too many times do bad things to the on/off button itself? I think I heard it somewhere...

But I'm quite interested in how the "power saver mode" on my monitor works... well almost all monitors have it: when there is no signal coming to it, the power LED will turn orange and the screen will shut itself down.

Yes, all buttons have a certain amount of reliable on/off uses..

Well, that is how standby mode works. The monitor detects no video signal or rather, it detects a different signal: (either H-sync or V-sync or is turned off by the video card, depending on standby or suspend mode)

The monitor then detects this and switches into a low power mode.

764452 2009-04-14 02:11:00 Would using a blank screen saver make the LCDs last longer?

By which I mean would a blank (black) screen saver switch off the LCDs? or do they remain on to create the black effect?

764453 2009-04-14 02:16:00 No, it still uses the same amount of power. I hate that stupid Black Google website that says it helps save power. beeswax34 (63)

Are you sure?

Cause I've heard that displaying the colour black instead of white saves power..on lcds

CRT vs. LCD

Energy savings for CRT monitors displaying white and black screens might still be significant. But an LCD monitor displaying any color is using far less power than a CRT monitor displaying a dark screen. If you're concerned about energy savings, use LCD over CRT. Also, turn off your monitor when you're not using it.

While we're at it, we might as well mention that power management is useful, but screensavers are not. Also, Unplugging things from the wall is even better than turning it off since the plug still drains energy even if the device is not on.
\On modern LCD monitors, the energy difference is at best negligible, and according to some reports, black may actually consume more energy than white. On older CRT monitors, there may be some gain, but it is very small compared to the savings by switching to an LCD monitor which uses 1/2 to 2/3 as much energy. Secondly, the savings purportedly measured to date is far less than the original promise suggested. In this case, the small bits that add up don't actually add up to much.

Also, Lynx, if you are worried about your on/off button, how do you live with shutting off your car each day? Or several times a day? Just think what thats doing to your ignition.
