764132 2009-04-12 04:28:00 Hi Folks. Using Vista Home Premium. As the administrator I run Acronis 11 from time to time to backup to a Seagate USB drive (DSE). Thought I would have a clean up and sort of start again having been updating for nearly 12 months, so set out to delete the contents of the USB drive. Each of the main folders I attempt to delete takes time to think about my order and comes back with an error message "Destination file access denied. You need permission to perform this action. Try again/Cancel". Try again just starts the loop again.

Who do I need permission from? I'm the administrator on a sole user machine.
Any help appreciated.

764135 2009-04-12 06:33:00 Who do I need permission from? I'm the administrator on a sole user machine Actually you're not - Even though your may have administrator rights, you are not the actual "real" Administrator.

To log on and show the "real " administrator do this:

Step 1: Open a command window by going to all programs -> accessories and choosing the Command prompt, right click and RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR

Step 2: type the following: net user Administrator /active:yes and hit enter

NOTE: if you dont want a password on the Admin Account ignore step 3

Step 3: type the following: net user Administrator Password (where Password is whatever you want the admin password to be) and hit enter

Type exit to close the dos box, reboot and your computer should present you with the option to login to your own account or the administrator account. That administrator password will be the one you set in the net user command above.

To hide the account again, do the same, but type in net user Administrator /active:No

Speedy and Blam6 - done and cleared up. New Backup done and clean.
Wainui - that wee lesson is appreciated and noted in the big book.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

764137 2009-04-12 08:35:00 download a program called unlocker and you will be able to do anything you want with this and any other file ccollomb.free.fr Roger Hunt (13648)
764138 2009-04-12 08:38:00 I know you like that program...

But this problem is slightly different. Unlocker is for when a process is using the file and therefore the file cannot be deleted/moved.

In this case-it is because of permission issues.

764139 2009-04-12 09:32:00 the take ownership.reg, also known as take control should do the trick. I use it reguarly The Error Guy (14052)
764140 2009-04-12 09:39:00 You can also to it from the command line.

Run CMD as admin>takeown /f Pathoffile

Then, type: icacls Pathoffile /grant yourusername:f
