763951 2009-04-11 05:09:00 Hi there, I have windows xp home (stand alone) not network or domain joined
I have IE7 and currently trying to redownload SP3. (Had to do a recovery)
Securing windows is my main mission since computer was last infected.
I have found sites on disabling services that have all been contradictory. eg
www.governmentsecurity.org
billmullins.wordpress.com
www.jasonn.com
(I have used advice in jasonn.com) but i still have alot of services that he does not cover which i will post later...

So does anyone know what can be turned off safely? Also very important what i need to KEEP ON
Because ive just had to do a recovery after disabling DCOM Server Process Launcher and COM+event system COM+system application
and i can never get application management service to work (error could not start the application management service on local computer. error 126: the specified module could not be found)

Now before you all ask me but why?
Heres some good reasons why...
To make my computer faster
To make my computer more secure
To make my computer less vunerable to malcious attacks
Because even pcworld recommends disabling stuff but for (vista)
Because if you dont use it or need it then why let it run and consume space and resources
Because if your not domain joined to a network then its never going to be necessary eg terminal services, remote desktop, secondary logon, computer bowser, etc
Because if you cant google it and dont understand it then why have it
To have less computer errors
So malicious software does not exploit or run under it.
Because if it wont start eg (application management service) then you mustnt need it
Because microsoft sent it to me in an update
Because microsoft forgot to ask me excuse me are you in a network? :groan:
So your dial up internet connection stops disconecting itself
So your mfc-210c brother printer will print black not just colour
So you can windows update
So you can install itunes
So you can uninstall what ever u like
to customise your pc to your specifications not H.P.
theres so many reasons to disable or uninstall preinstalled, unsecured programs and services, setups on your pc.

below is my hijack this log of services. I would really appreciate it if someone could take a long look at it and tell me what i dont need, and what i do.
Because i cannot find info on some of them eg whats web client? And should i mention application management again...lol...
last but not least do i really want to let windows firewall share my dial up internet connection with whom???:groan:

763952 2009-04-11 05:24:00 Well a lot of sites say you can disable this and that. I wonder if any of them have actually tried it themselves.

I disabled some services a while ago (the ones blackviper listed). However, over 1/2 - 3/4 of whatever wouldnt work.

Because I had disabled most of the services. So, in the end I put them back to whatever the settings were. So, I wouldnt trust any of these sites.

They probably dont have a clue what the service is / or does.

Depends what you mean by faster. If youre on dialup, you wont get any faster.

More ram / a faster CPU would probably speed things up.

Keep it up to date, thats why MS do updates every month. Everything can create errors (buggy software). Not much you can do about it, until whoever made it fixes it.

Not being rude but good luck to you with that. I doubt anyone here would have the time or inclination to go through that list for you, even if they did know exactly what everything was.

I have always found this site to be reliable in terms of it services configuration.

763955 2009-04-11 06:16:00 hi speedy
yeah i havent tried black vipers list because there was things listed there i did not want to disable either.
I wish microsoft would be decent enough to publish more information on their own services written in plain old english and not geek speek.
We dont even know what half of them are for.
And therefore we are unaware of what problems they cause and create.
Alot of them have vunerabilties hence the whole reason for windows update.
And because they leave our pcs unsecure we continually have to use other vendors software to find out whats going on with our own pcs.

763956 2009-04-11 06:21:00 hi blam
ive looked at that too but there were services there that I simply cannot disable like DCOM! Now DCOM baffles me. Its something about software programming and apparently i should disable it if i dont write programs (of course not). But I lose alot of functions with out it. My taskbar, and nearly EVERYTHING esle will not work without it. I have to do a complete recovery after disabling that one. and yet the info on it is really sketchy. Same with WMI (wont disable that again in a hurry)...lol...

763957 2009-04-11 06:33:00 actually blam that link was different and has provided me with more information than i thought... viewing pages now. thanks iammcb (14488)
763958 2009-04-11 06:36:00 A few extra "unneeded" services won't slow your computer down to a snail....and the hassle of re-enabling services you found out you needed etc is just stupid anyways.

I wouldn't worry about it.

763959 2009-04-11 07:00:00 it wasnt just the slowness that has me concerned.
i was not aware until i researched what was running automatically on my pc could be unsafe.
We all assume when we buy a pc, load the protection software (usually trial versions) connect to the net and windows update, that everything is going to be all good. Well no there are alot of things you should check before that. Because your pc could be infected even before it gets to install windows updates.
For instance I didnt know that client for microsoft networks and file and printer sharing should not be enabled for your internet connection if you were not in a domain. But yet when i run the new connection wizard and connect manually. these things are all added by default.
There are alot of things in windows xp that should not be allowed to run if not domain joined that i was unaware of. I think the information should be made easily avaliable.
Instead i spend hours researching it.
There are also problems with access that bother me no end when my pc tells me im not allowed to delete, open, or something else because im not the administrator!
