763834 2009-04-10 13:34:00 So I was talking with somebody recently about the virus troubles we've had on my sisters laptop.

It was suggested that using this Anti-Malware application might have prevented it. Talking with somebody else at the same time, they said it probably wouldnt have, but also recommended the application quite highly.

Question: What is the general consensus on PressF1 of the application, both in terms of usefulness, quality, reliability / stability and functionality? Worthwhile?

Cheers

Chill.

763835 2009-04-10 20:45:00 Have only just started using it in the last month or so (after reading comments about it on here).

Have found that after running the scan in safe mode, not really much point running anything else... its great (thus far anyway). I do install and scan with another AV though, just in case

Not sure about how it is for prevention though, as I have only used it as a clean-up tool

763836 2009-04-10 21:04:00 Prevent it? Probably not. Although I haven't tested the pay version on its abilitities.

For free programs I install:

Avast
Spybot
MalwareBytes

For Pay:
NOD32
Spybot
Counterspy

NOD32 does prevent a few things, nothing will save you 100%, if you deliberately download something but NOD is good at detecting dodgy websites and some downloads.

Test it on eicar and see..........

763837 2009-04-10 22:24:00 The free version of MBAM doesn't have real time protection, so I doubt it would have prevented the infection, but, IMO all you need is avast!'s real time protection, then scan with MBAM, Spyware Terminator and Spybot once a week/month and you're good to go...

For the best realtime protection, its Nod32

763838 2009-04-10 22:27:00 Malwarebytes is OK , but its far from perfect .

NO one Anti-Malware program will stop/ catch every thing .

When cleaning out a PC I use Malwarebytes, Spyware Terminator, Spybot, Spyware Doctor - and for real deep infections ComboFix, and a couple of other specialized removal tools . The others catch infections malwarebytes misses .

For customers day to day protection I install malwarebytes, Spyware terminator .
The only problem with the free Malwarebytes is LOTS of people wont remember to run it to check - I've gone back to peoples places and they have complained that the protection didn't work - then when looking at the logs the last run was when I did it months before - you can tell them till you're blue in the face to do it weekly, but most forget . Their paid one does have a scheduler .

Spyware Terminator has active protection and a scheduler
so if anything tries to install it generally will halt it and ask .

On Our Own House PC's I also have Spysweeper instead (thats a paid one) - that has active protection and will contain automatically any infections .

The best prevention is an educated PC user . Would suggest that you teach the users of the computer in question not to download any old thing or visit dodgy websites .

763842 2009-04-11 01:17:00 I have the free version and it has yet to find anything. I went to trend micro housecall and did an online scan and it found three items. I use AVG8.5 as my main scanner. I had spybot but didn't like it,don't like anything that messes with my host file.Avira was good but not as easy to use as AVG. I go to dodgy sites and don't have a problem that I am unable to fix with whats available free. Roger Hunt (13648)

Yes. The more the better.
I run the lot on my home PC. Not every day but: For one thing its a good way to keep up on how well they do, what changes have been made.

And no matter what you install for people, you have to do as much scheduling as you can (And spybot has scheduling now) and I put a document on the desktop as well as print it on the invoice stressing the need not only for regular scans but regular UPDATES as well.

Even then some people won't listen.......
