587619 2007-09-04 01:32:00 I had a glimpse thru all the previous posts in this regard and could not find it there. How do one resign from Xtra as your ISP - a call, a month's notice? A few years ago when I switched from Clear I never totally resigned, I just changed my dial-up plan to pay-as-you-use and never used it. I am forwarding emails from Clear though.

If I remember correctly, somebody mentioned that one can not forward emails from Xtra/Yahoo. If that's the case, is there no program that will go and "fetch" your emails for you?

I've been loathe to change - a big hassle to inform everybody but the latest b*ggerups peeved me off tremendously. My connection is still giving problems (frequent disconnects and the HelpDesk says I've got viruses and no, they will not change the DSLAM in the Exchange). Hopefully the new ISP will be able to help me there. At this time I'm sitting between XNet, Clear and perhaps Orcon, on one of their smaller data plans. (I've got the 10G Adventure plan with Xtra but never used it since my son left our home - only use about 2 - 3 Gb)

587620 2007-09-04 02:24:00 I'm in the process of changing from Actrix broadband to Slingshot broadband. I have been with Actrix since April 2002 both on dialup and broadband. I have had terrific service from Actrix and would highly recommend them to anyone. The reason I'm changing is my internet use has changed and Actrix don't have a plan that suits my requirements. Slingshot are doing all the work for me even to telling Actrix that I am no longer useing them. The plan I'm going on at Slingshot is the Pro 6gb which is max upload and download speeds depending on your phone line etc and as the name implies 6gb a month but you have the option to buy more at $10 per 10gb. Also doing tolls and telephone billing through them a saving of about $8 a month over Telecoms bill.

You can forward from YahooXtra but the difference now is that the emails don't remain on the yahoo server so you have to fetch them from where ever you've forwarded them to. Alternatively you can leave them and fetch from other ISPs

Your connection problems will probably follow you as the equipment will be the same until ISPs bring their own equipment in. Maybe another helpdesk could help, who knows?

If you're only using 2-3G why haven't you changed to the GO plan 3GB saving $20/month? At the bottom end there isn't as much difference in price between the ISPs

Still leaves me with a HelpDesk that does not want to believe the problem is not on my PC, or the line - both has been tested exhaustively, no problems. I do believe others on this forum had more joy with other ISPs where they request the D-slam change and it usually happens.

587623 2007-09-04 03:17:00 What's your modem these days? There's a post earlier this year where you mention that an old D-link was OK but there was trouble since going wireless. Why would the port on the Dslam that was OK have changed coincidentally with your changes? PaulD (232)
587624 2007-09-04 03:57:00 Unknown to me I had disconnects on the old system - it was picked up a bit later by my geek friend - I never knew about it, just thought that the PC is a bit slow today and although I could never prove it, I suspected it . What I thought was problems with the wireless was actually problems with the D-slam .

Then I started to play on-line Poker and lo and behold, every single disconnect (not site-based) is actually recorded . D/L'ed the Xtra helper bit as well, and do have a full 4 months of evidence of these disconnects . Xtra HelpDesk does not want to know about it - regardless of the fact that I run NOD32, and all the other malware programs that every good PF1'er would use, the *rseh*le still insist that the disconnects are caused by a virus . Had my geek friend, from Gen-I, to check the PC and line a few times and could not find a problem . Saw on this forum there were others having the same disconnects and it all pointed to the D-Slam . Walked past the exchange one evening as their Tech guy came out and asked him to tell me what kind of D-Slam is servicing my line . He confirmed it was the "problematic" Alcatel and "sorry mate, if I had a Nokia with me I would have changed it for you but I don't . Call the helpDesk" . And the HelpDesk says it's a virus . *Sob* .

Sooooo, to cut a long story short, we had all the problems I mentioned before we filtered the problem down the one thing - the D-slam . Googling it will give you quite a few posts of forums in NZ where guys experience the same problems with the Alcatels .

Hopes this makes more sense to you than to me

LOL

You'll also find others saying the reverse. Just remember that a Dslam isn't something that is individual to your line, it is a large unit serving many.
If you could believe everything tech guys tell you these forums would have much shorter threads :D

I wouldn't deal with a problem like this by phoning the helpdesk. Helpdesk workers always use the fastest excuse to get rid of you. Write letters.

:)Good luck with that. I left Slingshot over 2 months ago due to their crap speeds, and even worse helpdesk

I would think in the terms and conditions that you would need to contact the ISP directly, and tell them you would like to cancel the service. This is not only polite, but you do have a legally binding contract with them, where they may continue to bill you if you don't personally inform them. There is probably a condition in their Terms regarding this . A third party company, contacting a company that you have a contract with , to cancel a service doesn't sound right legally speaking.

I also wouldn't recommend slingshot. I am currently with them, but the download speeds at night are terrible especially international websites. They are ok during the day, but I am wanting to use it at night, Check out the slingshot forums and you will see lots of other people comments regarding speeds.
