588115 2007-09-05 20:37:00 Theres nothing wrong with the home based business.

Metla - I'm not a network engineer. Most medium or large businesses require at least some form of client/server support. And then I'm competing with CW - Gen-i operates down here too.
I really don't want to be one either - otherwise I could have tried working for CW.

The thing here with working from home is Wyndham and Edendale have a population each of 500 odd.
Word of mouth has happened but its still too small an area on its own. Yep, there are plenty of farmers on the outskirts - quite a few who probably still don't know I'm here yet.

I need to either work somewhere else part time and continue as I am or take the plunge and get the shop.

A lot of people take their PC into Gore now. If you try and travel to all these rural locations, and further afield to Gore and surrounds, thats a lot of travelling costs. If you try and charge for it, it makes it more than most will pay.
Which is why they go to Gore now.

Its a risk but I won't know if I never try.

I ran a small PC shop in Auckland once, for an absentee owner. At the last financial year I was there he made a gross profit of $7000.
He did however pay me $30k, and the other guy $25k which counted as an expense..
And it wasn't that busy, some days were, some days we did nothing much. There were tons of others around us too.
The place didn't stock a lot of parts, concentrated on repairs, builds and a few odd bits and pieces.
And in Auckland they are a dime a dozen.

I could well be posting here in a few months or so that I am out of business. Depressing but like I said, have to give it a go.

588116 2007-09-05 20:48:00 The other thing. I don't have a mortgage.

And the total actual loan for starting this thing up is $2000, from a friend with no interest on it. There are other funds, but its free, not a loan..........
Fairly minimal still, but enough to get going..........

Do not forget your fishing rod and flies for the odd slack day that I hope you don't have.

Maybe they will pay you in trout.

Go for it!
