| 588211 | 2007-09-06 11:56:00 | To the contrary, my wifes medical problem arose some 9-10 months after moving here, and we were amazed at the relatively prompt response from the medical service. No, I have not retired, inspite of being over 65, I bought a business to keep myself occupied and the only pension I draw is from my 22 years commissioned service in the armed forces. I was not aware of the excellent tax concessions for senior citizens in Australia when I moved here, it was a pleasant surprise, and just illustrates how senior citizens are valued as people who have made their contribution, rather than being looked upon as an expense centre once they have retired from the work force. You may recall the scandalous case in the late nineties of the elderly man in Kaitaia whom the Northland Health Board tried to force to sell his home to pay for for his elderly chronically ill wife's care in the Kaitaia Public Hospital - if they had been younger than 65 there would have not been any charge - blatant age discrimination against someone who has paid his dues all his working life, the only reason the Northland Health Board backed off was because of the public outcry. Everyone has a personal reason for their each and every decision, mine was quite simply that having visited Australia many times, both on business and on pleasure, my observations were that it offered a better lifestyle for myself and family than was available in New Zealand, and I could not see anything that was likely to change that. I have more than paid my dues to New Zealand, I have never asked anything in return other than a fair deal, and in my opinion, NZ doesn't offer that to the degree Australia does, and I am not bludging off the taxpayer, never have and never will. |

Good post Ken, I agree and remember the doco on it, wasn't it Fair go?...Absolutely outrageous behavior against the elderly and you are right, no regard for all the taxes etc they have contributed during their working years, when you consider now what the government agencies fund out to some of the minority groups and sob story cases we have nowadays..... 100% behind you! |

| 588217 | 2007-09-07 00:24:00 | Sure Metla, but do you want 20 million people from Bangladesh, India, China, or saharan Africa? More people leaving then arriving. Pretty simple stuff. Anything else you need explained to you? It doesn't change the fact that untold millions live in hell, while we kick back in paradise. |

| 588218 | 2007-09-07 01:02:00 | Actually this is the same argument that many Americans drag out as to how great their country is, that fact that many want to move there . When you point out that other first world nations are not beating their door down to get in, and that only 3rd world people want to immigrate they refuse to accept it . Same here, sure 3rd world nation populations want to come here, heck they want to go ANYWHERE . That does not mean squat in this debate . Just how many 1st world nation people are pounding on the door to get in, and why do they move? Why is our population stagant or declining when we are such a "paradise" . Why are kiwis leaving in droves and not returning if its its so great? Its not, people vote with their feet, and they are not walking in this direction . |
