| 587989 | 2007-09-05 22:00:00 | New Zealand has for too long had a tall poppy syndrome, those who excel get cut down if at all possible, our education system is not really geared to achievement and excellence (called elitism), apart from in sports, the apprentice scheme that served New Zealand so well was abandoned- one could go on and on - so many squandered opportunities. Take some of the lavish Treaty of Waitangi settlements, what have they really done to help the Maori people, especially young Maori, the only bright spot in those was what has been achieved for Southeren Maori by Terrence (Tipene) O'Regan. The Tainui settlement included the land that Waikato University and Waikato Technical Institute sit on, their contribution to Tainui coffers should have been in scholarships for young Maori, not cash to the elders. No matter how one looks for it, too many of NZ'z most talented and able young people seek greener pastures overseas, and whilst many do return later, career wise they are taking a backward step, they return not because of opportunities in NZ, but because they call the place home. The quest for mediocrity is very evident in our Education System, and that is tragic because educated young people are the future of the country. The government by and large determines the direction of education, and education has a large bearing on the future direction the country will take. |

Too little talented new blood offering. Depressing isn't it. | KenESmith (6287) | ||

| 587994 | 2007-09-07 01:28:00 | Responsibility in NZ Government lies with the Executive in the Cabinet - not the back bench or the opposition - and can we say that are politicians always conduct themselves with the utmost responsibility. Sinecure (Thesaurus) cushy number (informal),gravy train(slang), etc etc. If being a politician was such a rotten lowly paid overworked job, why is it that there are so many busting a gut to stay in parliament or get there. Unhappily politics in NZ does not attract many well qualified, talented, altruistic people whose aim is to serve the people of their country and make it a better place to live. Possibly the system corrupts those who initially enter parliament with genuine altruistic motives. |
