If you put your domain name in to here: http://intodns.com/ it will tell you wants wrong.

764179 2009-04-12 08:18:00 It's good to see they've got it up and running again.

If for whatever reason you stay with them, you should have a discussion with them to clarify whether they are running both primary and secondary DNS servers on the same box. The purpose of having two (or more) is if one goes down, the other will pick up the slack - it seems that "phage" going down took out both in this case, although it may just have been a coincidence.

764180 2009-04-14 13:23:00 Host it yourself from one of your Own PC's - then all you need to do is get your ISP to redirect your domain name to your IP Address and away you go.
That's certainly a cheap and cheerful option for non-critical websites, but do be sure your ISP actually allows you to host a website first. Many ISPs specifically don't allow their customers to host websites or email, so check the fineprint :)

764181 2009-04-14 13:53:00 Pretty much *all* ISP's don't allow it, just like the fine print of most of them actually includes hosting Games on things like your Xbox ...

They couldn't care less if you do though, its more to stop people complaining when their IP changes.

764182 2009-04-14 14:19:00 They couldn't care less if you do though, its more to stop people complaining when their IP changes.Perhaps, but if your site became too popular or began to attract the wrong kind of attention I'll bet they'd be pretty quick to start caring. Such is always the way of the T&C blind eye - it's just something to be aware of at the very least. If you're going to do it, just know that you may be breaking the terms of your contract and all that potentially entails.

I've always wanted to host a site on a box at home, but I think I share the same syndrome as the builder who never finishes his own deck... by the time I'm finished with work, the last thing I want to do is deal with my own web hosting :D

764183 2009-04-14 14:45:00 slingshot dont seem to mind my webserver, or at least they havent picked up on it yet, maybe its because im using a no-ip DNS and its not really that popular (over 1k in my home page counter) williamF (115)

I think if you start hosting an open relay SMTP server, they'll start caring pretty quickly.

been there done that - if you look at my profile you will see I'm a Tech, run my own business, so YES I did ask directly. Telstra host my Domain name so its quite easy - the site is currently working from my IP, but FAR from finished - once finished I simply contact Telstra as below and they change the settings and its away.

Being on Telstra Cable you automatically have a static IP- so it doesn't change.

Part of the reply from Telstra - the rest was just explaining what settings:
Thank you for contacting us, yes it is possible for you to host your own website on you Cable highspeed internet connection. All we need to do is change the @ and www records for your domain to point to your static IP address.

Its not finished yet, in fact its more like, just started  Its along the lines of Pcteks - (easiest way to explain it) Its NOT another online Computer shop like Ascent, as I don't sell online - to much of a hassle keeping prices upto date etc.

It working Via my IP Address, but once finished :rolleyes:I'll contact Telstra and they can redirect to my domain/Company name.
