588768 2007-09-07 06:08:00 So your saying they need more firing practice?

588769 2007-09-07 10:31:00 No, it appears that everything they learn in practice is forgotten as soon as the 1st shot is fired. In that case the police bosses couldn't explain the number of shots fired "they're trained to fire 3 shots and check". It seemed as long as there was cop firing they all assumed that the shots were coming AT them esp Mr 31. ps, they'd all been drinking in a topless bar :D

Seems strange why not just say bar.Why should going to a nudee bar make you a worse shooter than drinking in a non nudee bar.

588771 2007-09-07 10:50:00 As an illustration of the problems we have blaming the perpetrator it's spot on. Civilians have no chance of not incurring many months of drama in trying to defend property & self as shown by the farmer & gunshop owner recently.

Even the police must cower as the waitara case shows. Coming at you with a golf club? run away! Or shoot & be Damned for the rest of your life.

Or use a taser. The taser is an excellent weapon to be added to the NZ police IMO. I prefer a police force who aren't required by law to run away from people with weapons.

I have no illusions about corrupt cops and brutality, but unfortunately that's all we got, and we're better than most countries. Few people will be tasered who would not otherwise be given much worse, or allowed to perpetrate who knows what.

588772 2007-09-07 11:36:00 The use of a firearm against a human being is not something that comes naturally to anybody. By all accounts, even in wartime most ammunition is completely wasted. From memory, in WWII, there was one fatality for every 2,500 rounds (or so) fired.

The police don't get military training, either.

588773 2007-09-07 11:38:00 Eh, I'd still prefer a criminal nailed to the ground with 20-30 bullet holes in him. Nice to hear the joke again. beeswax34 (63)
588774 2007-09-07 11:48:00 Take the Takamore issue where the police's ineffectual action has allowed family members to take action against the wishes of the estate executor.

The police in their folly are now in negotiation with both families to reach a solution??

However the law has already spoken and support the executor of the estate.

Do you think either the American or the Australian cops would have taken this stand. I bet you they wouldn't.

I was pretty appalled when I heard that the Police did not support the execution of the Court Order.

However, to be fair, I thought their explanation was reasonable. Being a remote station, having only one hour's notice that the burial was taking place against a Court Order and being entirely without reinforcement facing an almost certainly hostile community it would have been remiss of any commander to order their officers to attend.

But now that the Police have time it is a different story.

That the Police have decided to negotiate with both parties shows that they are moving toward a different policing model - the community oriented approach. If they are able to assist with a resolution by keeping ties strong and healthy with the local community then the outcome will be better.

The rational deterrence policing model - where an adversarial approach is taken to the community - would only be disastrous and stressful for everybody involved in this situation.

A good percentage are ex military anyways.

Who counted all of the WWII ammo to come up with that figure? Seems pretty foul as thousands died without even releasing a round....

588776 2007-09-10 00:16:00 How does the government or NZ society expect the Police to protect public or private property or their lives for that matter when we don't give them a fair chance or adequate equipment to protect their own lives from day to day in the field.

All this politically correct song and dance about assessing the situation before you draw and fire or assessing the mental / emotional state of the person charging at you with a knife, samurai sword, gun, broken bottle etc before you fire is a load of crap.

I bet there were hardly any public protests in the streets when a Police officer did all these things "according to the book" and got injured, maimed or killed. Yet the minute a police officer fires his weapon whether it be a taser or other in the line of duty, the wider NZ public throws their toys out the cot and cry police brutality and inhumane tactics.

I for one hope that if I am faced with a criminal or whatever you want to call them nowadays and the Police are involved I hope I get the trigger happy officer... who chooses to do his job and protect me rather than sit and read a 200 page manual about Freud's methods of dealing with unstable people.

Society today is filled with a different criminal element, there are different influences.... drugs etc which are used by criminals and thus alter their state of mind. The Police need to change their methods of policing to ensure public safety. Essentially if the crims bring a AK-47 to the party then the Police need to have the power to bring something equally as powerful to ensure that law and order prevails.

It is not a matter of shoot first, shoot some more and then when the dust clears ask questions... it is simply a matter of understanding that the Police face situations everyday where they don't have time to regurgitate the manual from Police college before they take action... they only have enough time to act... and yes sometimes the outcomes are regrettable and their is loss of life... but the criminals ARE playing for keeps and they WILL NOT hesitate to put a cop down... they don't care about his family, wife & kids etc why do we expect the Police to think this way in a situation where their life in under threat.

Cheers

588777 2007-09-10 01:11:00 Great joke but unfortunately it is so true! Loved the punchline from the daughter.......

......as for the gunshop owner, trying to bring a prosecution against him was not in the public interest and secondly, taking a knife to a gunfight was even dumber. I would have preferred to see the surgeons decide to amputate that fellows leg rather than operate - he won't be a menace to society when he's in a wheelchair.....much like that other crim in Wellington who shot the cyclists.
