Actually, a lot of the technology pundits are expecting the iPhone to lose popularity for just this reason - there are no buttons and therefore no tactile feedback to the user.

Remember, interfaces are an incredibly important part of the success of a technological product. It is what sets the iPod apart from the rest - because it is easy to use and intuitive.

But a cellphone has only one hard interface with the user - buttons - and the iPhone has none. Familiarity will not allow the user to speed up their use of the phone because they will always have to look at the touchscreen to use the damn thing.

Tablet notebooks died a death for the very same reason.

Back in 1997 a lot of technology pundits were calling Apple beleaguered too.
If the iPhone is so doomed then why has Nokia just released a carbon copy of the iPhone with the new Nokia?
Surely if the concept was that bad they would have gone in another direction...?

All Mini models will be equipped with an iPhone-compatible interface, BMW has announced.BMW previously offered iPhone support via Bluetooth and USB on 3 and 5 Series (beginning with March 2007 production), X5 (April 2007) and 6 Series (September 07) cars for the North American market. Along with the Mini, the 1 series has now also been added to the list.

With the forthcoming European launch of the iPhone, BMW will present the iPhone-equipped vehicles at the Frankfurt Auto Show on September 13.

Nokia has a huge product range. They can well afford to try a product.

Apple has only one cellphone in their cellphone range.

Oh, and winmacguy, if you read my comment carefully (such as, more than once...), I am not suggesting that Apple is beleaguered. Just that they made a poor design choice with the touchscreen on the iPhone.

iPhone Becomes Leading U.S. Smart Phone Model in July
September 4, 2007

Apple Inc.’s iPhone outsold all smart phones in the United States during July, and equaled the sales of the most popular feature phone, according to iSuppli Corp. The iPhone accounted for 1.8 percent of all mobile-handset unit sales to U.S. consumers during July. Most iPhone purchasers in July were male, 35 years of age or younger and possessed a four-year college degree or more.

Strong early consumer uptake conforms with iSuppli’s forecast of 4.5 million iPhones shipping in 2007, rising to more than 30 million units in 2011.
