764499 2009-04-13 02:12:00 Guys

3 times this week there has been this weird noise (high pitched whine disappearing to nothing) coming from the PC about 5 minutes after startup in the morning. Almost inaudilbe but repeats regularly for around 10 minutes then my Asus Smartdoctor warns me my gfx temp is over 85 degrees. Upon reboot everything seems fine.

Started making the same noise this morning and I took off the side of the case. Just as the warning popped up again I had a look at the 4870 and the fan had totally stopped. I had it on manual set to 100% - didn't want to know..Gave it a flick with the finger and it spins upto speed and temps drop back to 46. Since had a look on a couple of USA led forums and it appears LOTS of other people have had dead fans but no-one is the wiser if its bios, card or fan related. Given its 2 months old I would hope computerlounge choose to replace versus repair. It would appear people are getting their cards rma'd and the replacements die within a matter of weeks on a few other forums.

Anyone here had the above issues on the 4870.?

Thx

764500 2009-04-13 02:38:00 If it works after you give it a push, it sounds like it's the fan itself which is the problem

maybe the repaired cards die because they've already been damaged from overheating?

764501 2009-04-13 03:17:00 Never had any issue with my ASUS 4870x2.
And uninstall Smartdoctor, they make good cards but **** software.

764502 2009-04-13 04:17:00 Damn, 100% fan speed on stock fan of 4870? I can't even handle 40%!!

Just permanently set it to 30%. Mine idles at 46-58 degrees (depending on room temp between 10-30 degrees, of course) and loads at up to 85, which is perfectly acceptable for a 4870. I don't know if setting it on 100% had a role in your fan failing, but I highly suspect that's the case.

764503 2009-04-13 05:28:00 Sorry . Let me clarify . . I am using smartdoctor to set the fan speed and it also gives me GPU temps . . What else can I use? Thanks

Its been set on manual at approx 40% for last 2 months . Everything working fine . I noticed from day one it constantly cycled a lot ( even on manual setting) from low to high every 10 seconds or so which was driving me nuts but I got used to it . .

Then approx 8 days ago the first ' high temp' warning, then a 2nd and finally had a look at the fan today . The only reason its running at 100% just now is because I manually set the fan speed there to see if anything changed but the fan still appeared dead until I gave it a spin . . . Its also making odd noises from cold boot up - a whine for about 2 seconds then nothing for 20 . Then another whine etc etc . . After 10 minutes of this the fan stops and temps rocket . So the fact I'm running it at 100% manual for last 8 hours has nothing to do with it starting to crap itself last week .

The more sites I review from around mid feb onwards, a lot of people are seeing the same issue again and again . Was just curious if others in NZ had any issues .

764504 2009-04-13 05:46:00 No idea but obviously something is stuffed, return it.

Or maybe your PSU could not handle it, and it stuffed it for you

764505 2009-05-05 00:46:00 So the sage continues . . . Replacement card ( don't know if its new or not) arrived last night - approx 2 weeks after I sent it back to Computerlounge . Installed last night and the fan runs at 100% . . .

Tried latest software in smartdoctor and no change . Unistalled all smartdoctor and drivers and reinstalled latest Catalyst Control Centre . . I also unistalled the drivers for the cheapo interim gfx card I installed whilst the 4870 was getting repaired .

Unlocked the hyperdrive controls in CCC, played with the slider and the little fan icon in the lower right hand side changed its % speed relative to where i put the slider . . However, no change in the actual fan speed on the card . no change in fan noise and its still running at full horsepower and is LOUD ! Its louder than all 4 cooling fans I have in the case !

Card temp also went a bit erratic ( once) from -15c to 92c in about 2 secs then stabilised at approx 42c . . .

Any clues . . Does this sound like a driver issue, a firmware issue ( older card??) or a hardware issue? CL haven't got back in contact yet . .

Thanks

Get rid of Smartdoctor . It's complete crap .

Undo what you did with CCC .

Then see how it goes before complaining . 42 degrees is cool . Mine runs hotter idle than that .

764507 2009-05-05 03:10:00 Hi PCTek

I have uninstalled smartdoctor based on your and others recommendations using the unistall feature in vista x64 . Uninstalled the older ATI driver as well before reinstalling the latest version .

No change . . From the moment I switch on the fan is flat out and wont change . I don't know how fast its running other than the PC sounds like a dyson vacuum cleaner ( not quite as loud perhaps but when you sit 2 feet from it, not far off)

Only after I was sure it was not working through auto control did I 'tick' the manual fan control box in the hyperdrive area to have a shot . . That still made no difference . . Everything onscreen telling me the speed has changed correctly after I hit the ' APPLY ' button but the fan still runs flat out .

Card is 2 months old - Computerlounge wont credit me, wont allow me to pay more monies (at this time) for a different model of card and want me to send it back so they can send it to the suppliers . . . So far . . . . that'll be $60 for insured delivery and $70 for a replacement interim model that funnily enough works !!!

I guessed the cool temp was due to the fan working flat out, sucking like a new born baby all the cool air from the bedroom it sits in - approx 14c .

Rant over . . :groan: :thanks

What brand is it? I guess ASUS due to your using Smartdoctor.......
Mine cranks its fan up when I first boot, and that sounds like a Jet Engine, but then it settles unless I play something in a hot room. Thats only happened on the odd day last summer, winter it doesn't.

checked its temps when I first got it and it does run hotter than any card I've had before but if you're sure its not normal, send it back.....Computer Lounge have a good reputation, they don't stuff you around.

What case do you have it in? One with crap airflow won't help at all, its not just case fans, its room in the case as well. I've seen those nasty cube cases cook graphics cards, regardless of the case fans.
