588346 2007-09-05 21:06:00 I've been given a gift of a digi camera (Canon Powershot S2 IS) from my brother who upgraded to the latest in the range.

It comes with the Canon CB-4AHE Ni-MH battery charger, which has a stern warning not to use non-Canon branded batteries as there's a risk of spontaneous combustion, explosion or even The Return of The Mother-in-Law. I'd prefer to use no-name batteries or Energisers. Is the risk real?

588347 2007-09-05 21:21:00 I assume you mean AA or AAA batteries? If so, I use rechargeables in my Sony DSC93 - but I use the Energiser charger and have 2 sets of batteries.

Just in case

588348 2007-09-05 23:20:00 Maryann has the S31S. We have a powerhause 4 battery charger & use any brand of batteries, but keeping them in sets. We have had no problems. Usually watch for specials at Dick Smiths. PJ:thumbs: Poppa John (284)
588349 2007-09-06 01:09:00 Obviously . . . keep like brands together at all time . . if it takes 4 AAs for a device, make sure they are all the same manufacturer . . and charge then together too as a set .

There are some minor differences in batteries from maker to maker and that is usually enough to cause untoward performance if you mix them all up .

Other than that . . I don't see any likely problems with NOT using a particular brand by a manufacturer's namesake .

I once owned a small cheap-o digital camera that when I put a certain brand of rechargeable batteries . . all charged up . . into it, it kindly asked me to install fresh batteries .

So I use that as a basis for my opinion about differences in rechargeables from company name to company name .

588350 2007-09-06 03:38:00 Maybe if you mix 'em up the mother in law will spontaneously combust

The camera makers just say that so you'll buy their overpriced batteries . . . DSE batts have always worked for me in high-drain devices :D

588351 2007-09-06 05:14:00 My Daughter has a Canon Powershot S2 IS. We just use Rechargables on a separate charger plus I carry E2 AA Energizer batteries for spare if we are out as they fit my Wife's Kodak Z740 as well.

I don't think I have ever used the Canon charger.

588352 2007-09-06 14:17:00 With my old Digital Camera I still use Energizer rechargeables. Come to think of it, I've never used any other and they work very well and without ANY problems whatsoever.

Enjoy the camera:)

588353 2007-09-07 04:47:00 The S2 IS is a great camera, really versatile. I really should get some rechargables for it. dolby digital (5073)
