765582 2009-04-16 04:55:00 What is the recommended amount of memory for vista?

The reason I ask is that my friends machine runs vista and seems be taking forever to start and load programs.

The pc crashes twice a day such as internet explorer and outlook express.

765583 2009-04-16 05:15:00 Absolute minimum is 1GB. 2GB or more is recommended.

Make sure that Service Pack one is installed. What antivirus software is your friend using? Get them to post a hijackthis (www.trendsecure.com) log here, also clean out temporary files with CCleaner (www.ccleaner.com) and update adobe flash player (get.adobe.com).

It won't be crashing in Outlook Express because there is no such thing in Vista - would it be Windows Mail?

765584 2009-04-16 05:23:00 We have done a CCleaner scan and cleaned all that. McAfee Virus software is installed.Service pack 1 is installed.

It is windows mail not outlook express

765585 2009-04-16 05:25:00 McAffe is a real system hog, in my opinion its horrible and would recommend removing it and installing NOD32 or Avast.

However, even though it is of the devil and it may cause slowness, it shouldn't shouldn't cause freezing. I have seen stranger things though.

How much RAM does your friend have?

Post the hijackthis log when you can so we can see what's running on the PC.

765586 2009-04-16 05:30:00 1GB of RAM convair (13650)
765587 2009-04-16 06:18:00 Thats probably why.

Get another gig for around 25-40 bucks and you'll see a nice speed increase.

For now, download Hijackthis and post a log here for analysis as it could also be other things slowing down the PC

765588 2009-04-16 06:20:00 Well if IE and Mail crash, tell him to note what it says, (what file is crashing), then post the details here. It could be an addon in IE thats corrupted or stuffed why its crashing. Speedy Gonzales (78)
765589 2009-04-16 06:27:00 Have run CCleaner and cleaned up everything, created a restore point and removed a couple of unwanted programs. Updated the adobe flash player and installed IE8. Seems to be running better now.

On the RAM note, will have to look at RAM and see how much it will cost to get.

765590 2009-04-16 06:29:00 Wouldn't be at all surprised if it were McAfee - As Wratteus said "McAffe is a real system hog", seen that cause a lot of "strange" problems - removing it generally fixed the problem. wainuitech (129)
765591 2009-04-16 06:52:00 My friend has been using the PC for a while now with no more problems . I think we may sorted it out .
