765419 2009-04-16 01:04:00 Hi to all. I have a Dell Dimension 8300 Desktop with Windows XP home sp3, 512 MB RAM and an Nvidia GEforce FX 5200 graphics card. And I also have a Gateway MX6216 laptop with Windows XP home sp3, 2GB of RAM (max) and some intel graphics card I dont remember.

Now the question is, wich are the best graphics cards I could get for both of my systems keeping in mind that I can only use $200. The current cards my system have are not compatible with many games right now and I want them mostly for gamming.

Thanks in advance!

765420 2009-04-16 01:06:00 Well you probably cant change the laptop's since its onboard. Unless youre planning on buying something external. Which wouldnt be cheap

Is the FX5200 AGP?? It maybe pretty hard to find AGP videocards these days as well

765421 2009-04-16 01:15:00 Um, sorry but what is AGP? And ive never heard of external graphics card, where do I get those... JOYBEBA6679 (10686)
765422 2009-04-16 01:21:00 Its a type of graphics card connection.

Give us your PC model no. and we can find out

Forget about upgrading your laptop's GFX card.

Even if you do find one that is compatible it will be either too expensive or the laptop's CPU will bottleneck it.

What CPU does the desktop have?

Getting a $200 GFX card but having a slow CPU will still mean you won't be able to play new games. You'll probably have to upgrade the CPU AND GFX card. Maybe the motherboard too. And the PSU if it cannot provide enough power

765423 2009-04-16 01:58:00 There are some AGP cards about still, but they are getting hard to locate.

Just looked on one of my vendors sites - the ATI 3650 AGP 512MB 128-bit DDR2, 2x Dual Link DVI-I, TV Out, DX10

Thats under $200 Ascent have them (www.ascent.co.nz)

765424 2009-04-16 02:33:00 Well the desktop has an Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00 GHz JOYBEBA6679 (10686)
765425 2009-04-16 03:15:00 With a P4 3.0 - upgrade the memory with another 1 - 2 GB the Mother board can take 4 GB by its specs, and add in a better graphic card.

While this will increase the performance quite a bit - because of the age of the PC you will be limited to what upgrades you can do - some components will be expensive due to their age, compared to a Newer component that wont fit your Motherboard.

What you have to look at is compare prices for upgrading your current PC, compared to buying Newer components.

For example: ( prices from Ascent)your Motherboard has DDR RAM, 1GB of DDR 333 is about $100.00.

BUT DDR2 800 - which your board will not take (I looked up the dell specs) but a modern board will is around $40.00

765426 2009-04-16 03:23:00 I see, so I guess im better off just buying a new Good gamming pc... JOYBEBA6679 (10686)
765427 2009-04-16 04:07:00 I see, so I guess im better off just buying a new Good gamming pc...

Certainly in the long run that is a better option, yes :)

However with your low ($200) budget, it might be better to look on trade me for something 2nd hand, but even then, you'll be stretching it

765428 2009-04-16 05:33:00 The existing FX5200 card is about right for that model. You are unlikely to get $200 worth of improvement [as the other components have limited capabilities]. PENTIUM (426)
