765387 2009-04-16 00:25:00 Hi all,

What are peoples advise when it comes to backup software, shareware if there is any?
Something just to back up those personal files to an external drive is what i had in mind.

Cheers,

Vic. :illogical

765388 2009-04-16 00:52:00 Maybe try Syncback (www.2brightsparks.com) (freeware version - V3.2.19.0) for files/folders and has various features. Also Driveimage XML (www.runtime.org) for image back ups. kahawai chaser (3545)

Toucan is also quite good, or Cobian backup

765390 2009-04-16 01:38:00 Macrium reflect (free version) looked pretty good when I tried it a few weeks ago. http://www.macrium.com/

I wanted something that would let me take a complete disk backup (to say a USB HDD) and create a boot CD that would let me restore the whole disk. ie a complete backup/restore solution.

I tested it and was quite impressed - it worked!

765391 2009-04-16 01:53:00 I get a nice clean run on Comodo Backup to a Seagate USB drive for data and Acronis 11 for programmes. The Seagate is in 2 drives, one for each. Scouse (83)
765392 2009-04-16 06:37:00 Another vote for syncback. Have used it for years and it is great for file backup.
I too have recently tried Macrium. Best free image backup I have found.

765393 2009-04-18 12:50:00 I got BARTPE,made a windows LIVE boot disk. Used the 'A43 file manager' to copy entire drive to a spare. Its a little slow to boot from CD(several minutes) but it works for me. Strangely,if you put it in with windows running,it boots and a 'go' button overlaps your start button and its all there! Even calculator and paint, for some reason!

I wasnt prepared to try a dozen different 'free' programs, and I had already done similar things with puppylinux(live linux boot CD which automatically mounts all drives for you)

765394 2009-04-18 14:03:00 Good program is BartPE, because can be used with the free Driveimage XML plugin (www.solo-technology.com) to transfer a backup image to a external drive. kahawai chaser (3545)
765395 2009-04-19 22:21:00 Hi peeps,

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions! Downloaded Syncback and it looks like it'll do the job nicely. However, now i have a new issue.

Seems my external HD isnt behaving. Its a WD 320Gb Sata drive in a Vantech USB/eSATA Enclosure. When I connect it to my computer it comes up as recognised but the drive letter doesnt appear. Its as if the Hd hasn't been formatted. So I format the drive. Works fine, but as soon as i disconnect and then reconnect it I'm back to square one. Sees the drive but its as if its not formatted.

I have tried 2 different Enclosures and 2 Pcs as well as a MAc. Same deal.

Does this mean the HD is failing? I havent tried installing it as a internal drive as yet...

Unfortunately I purchased the HD from C1 which as most know has gone under. The drive has worked fine until now and i've had it since Feb 2009.

Any thoughts?

cheers,

Vic.

765396 2009-04-19 22:26:00 Try this..plug in the drive, go to disk management(run>diskmgmt.msc)
Right Click your drive and select "change Drive letter and paths" select "add" and give it a letter.

See if that works
