590533 2007-10-03 23:19:00 Aside from the fact that there is a certain age when one should stop crawling naked under a house - I believe it is about three - we have now established that there are no rat runs under there. So, as I don't feel like repeating the experience pixs are out.

However will contemplate the idea of video as certain branches adjacent to house and power lines are removed. If I stand at a decent distance with camera whilst branches are felled and IF they fall the wrong way, or rats are lurking in them waiting for their next flying leap, pixs could be interesting.

I'm fairly patient..can wait for the vids..make sure they contain the screams too.....

590534 2007-10-03 23:27:00 The rats are getting down on the bait.

We have about 6 traps around the property - 2 official boxes and 4 x 300mm lengths of downpipe with a wire running through a couple of holes in the middle. Bait (comes as disks with a hole in the middle) is threaded on the wires so they have to eat it there - and being in the middle our determined labrador and the neighbour's cat can't get at it.

The neighbours reported one dead rat on the drive and we saw a bunch of blow flies by an overgrown patch in the garden by the stream so there may have been another in there.

According to the Council streams and hen houses bring rats so it is kind of an inevitable problem (one neighbour had a hen house recently and the stream is always there). It's just a case of knocking off as many as we can now, keeping the traps going long term and denying them access to the roof.

The weather at the moment is up and down all over the place and we have one or two other things on at the moment. Looks like next week.

Not sure how well it will go down me holding a video camera instead of helping with the work. I have a faint feeling though that it could all turn out a bit boring. How likely is it that 300 rats will be lurking in one small tree when we go to chop it down in the middle of the day?

May have to head down to the TV studios in West Auckland to see if they can throw in a few special effects to enliven the video to North American tastes. Will they do this for free?

Alternate thought - how good are my video editing skills and where can I find videos of large numbers of rats for editing purposes?

There may be some stock footage from the movie "Ben" or even from "The Day Of The Triffids" . . . I think they ran when the fires got too close to them and fece-ed and urinated all over the humans .

If you don't have a good helmet cam, why don't you just improvise?

Using the handyman's secret weapon: duct tape, you can fashion a pretty good camera holding device from just a colander from the little woman's stash of never-used bridal gifts, two flexible spatulas for Teflon® frying pans so they don't scratch the surface and some duct tape .

Don't worry about scratching your ears or bald pate . . . it won't show when the camera is running anyway . We just don't want to scratch the camera we borrow from the neighbors, and getting the glue from the duct tape off is gonna be a lot easier if you use a non-scratch plastic spatula if you eventually do return the camera .

If the women don't find you handsome, they at least oughtta find you handy . And remember that I'm pulling for ya .

OK...but I gotta know...I shouldda even known yet didn't.

I noticed however, that you never squawked about the "bald' part,

Is this "Mercury" the famous messenger or the slippery metal?

In the future, all wimmin will write in PINK text.

MODS: Right after the clock is corrected, I expect to see this PINK rule enforced!

590540 2007-10-04 19:43:00 So . . .

Women to write in pink

Men to write in blue

Those who have yet to make up their mind, or wish to remain gender neutral - yellow

Women can do anything . The trick is to avoid doing everything . I therefore leave some tasks, such as burning the rubbish, mowing the lawns and felling trees and branches to the male of the house .

As he leaves all technological matters to me (sorting out computer, tv, stereo problems and setting the timer on the coffee perk etc) this is only fair .

We were both crawling round under the house looking for rats . When it comes to the trees I'll be the one moving vegetation to the trailer and keeping the working area free of branches .

Standing well clear with the video camera whilst felling is in progress though has appeal . Particularly if sleeping rats fall on HIS bald head!
