765200 2009-04-17 02:26:00 I've heard you can copy the certificate into an Nlite install to prevent re-entering of the product key. Is that legal? Sorry cant answer that - dont know.

If it were going back into the same machine then shouldn't be a problem -

BUT read between the lines ;) If it works on One PC ------------

Yep, thats what a meant, if you reinstalled on the same machine.

765202 2009-04-19 00:01:00 Current situation -
- Re-installed Vista Basic from Vista Enterprise (the laptop wouldn't boot from the DVD)
- now have a dual-boot machine with Vista Basic on the D: drive, I've shortened the time for you to choose down to one second so as far as the owner will know, it will go straight to Vista Basic.
- entered the legit numbers from the sticker on the bottom and was told it was not correct for what I had installed (pretty much as I had expected) and I have been given an option to do it all to an automated phone service.
- now have 30 days to activate.

My questions now:-
- what happens if I don't activate?
- surely there must be a catch to this dial-up activation service?
- Have any of you used it?

cheers.

765203 2009-04-19 00:07:00 if you dont activate it, are the 30 days it will simply not startup into windows.

just ring MS, and tell them you have to install the OS from the product key on the back of the laptop, and they should just give you a new set of numbers to type in. I have to do this sometimes 3-4 times a week, never had a problem yet.

765204 2009-04-19 01:16:00 Apparently you can extend the windows vista activation period to 120 days. Links here (www.howtogeek.com)

I personally haven't tried it, but theres a few sites that have the same method.

I don't understand then what the point of the automatic dial-up service is?

765206 2009-04-19 01:40:00 Yep you can extend out the activation period to 120 days, you have to do whats called "rearming" every 29 days (tried it a few times on 30 days and it said it had expired already) - if you miss the time even by 1 day it wont rearm - BUT theres no point if its a working every day PC/Laptop, because at the end of the 120 days it HAS to either be activated anyway, or the drive wiped and reinstalled. wainuitech (129)
765207 2009-04-19 01:52:00 I don't understand then what the point of the automatic dial-up service is? Most of the time windows does activate Via the "Activate Online" method, BUT sometimes it doesn't - hence the phone method.

I asked MS once why this happens, and the Tech guy said sometimes it looks and the hardwares serial numbers have already been activated by another COA ( original install) , and this can cause the auto Activation not to work.

What usually happens is you call MS, on 0800 676 600 Option 2 , it will ask you to punch in Via your touch tone phone the 42 number Windows produced. Eg: 123456-678911-123465- etc.
Then it can say its already been activated on another machine or some other message, and depending on what the problem is, it will give you options to talk to a real person -
They confirm the first 6 numbers - you then simply tell them the OS was installed using the Legal product key on the back of the Laptop / PC.
They may ask has it been on any other PC's - you say NO, and they give you a new set of 42 numbers to type in - done, Activated and all legal.

Theres actually 4 people in Asia I normally get, 1 of them we are on first name basis now  - last time I introduced myself (again) and he said - " Hi - same thing as last time (my real name)" -- yeah same sh1t, different PC - he laughed and gave me the new numbers.
