1300 has rack and pinion steering.
All car steel car rims are made from mild steel if they cracked it must have been something else. Maybe too thin cracked on welds etc. It didnt happen in NZ because LTSA has no record of it.
I have worked with BMLC cars for over 30 years and today is the first time I have ever heard of these problems.Sure you can get 1 offs like any bit of machinery. Just remember if its got tits and tyres its going to cause you problems unless its a Ford.

589372 2007-09-10 06:06:00 What was wrong with the Allego?
They were 1300s with a different body. I think they had hydrospastic suspension.
The 1100/1300 went from 1962 to 1975 if they were so bad how come they were big sellers for a long time.
Maybe the Poms didnt reconize a good car when they saw it

Unfortunately I bought one!
I do remember reading a report on them by an American car expert who reckoned that much to his surprise it was potentially the best car he had tested while in the UK. But never developed - in other words it could have been a real cracker.
I liked the suspension and general utility but it really was a gutless wonder. On one occasion it just about managed some reasonable hills in Canterbury with 4 of us in the car - but it was an effort.
But at least it could stagger up some hills many cars didn't even know existed.
The oil seals I had to try to fix and could not believe the appalling design (I was an engineering designer).
It eventually seized up trying to climb the hills out of Akaroa.

589373 2007-09-10 06:06:00 I wouldn't of minded seeing the Chevvy BelAir do the quarter in 1.08 secs, blink & you missed it Whenu (9358)

To cross the line in about 1 second requires a finishing line speed close to the speed of sound. I'm not sure any BelAir could get anywhere close to that, even in free-fall. Is the 1.08 a typo?

Wow, even on a good day it takes me a lot longer than that just to drink a pint. (Might be a quarter furlong.)

Lets say it could do the 1/4 mile in 1.08 seconds - that reminds me of the engineers proof of why Santa Claus could not possibly exist : www.engineeringedu.com
