Couldn't you just use Everest or Magical Jellybean etc to find the Vista key, Write it down, then do a complete reinstall?

765191 2009-04-15 23:39:00 You can install any Vista version on a PC/laptop as a trial, The upgrade to a different version may go in without the key, BUT the key you have for basic will only work/activate in Basic. The hardware and power of the laptop/PC will also dictate if some features work or not, Eg: if the spec's are to low, Aero wont work, vista turns it off.

The Vista DVD you get will have all 7 versions of Vista (yes theres Seven) doesn't matter which version you purchase.
The product key is what determines what version is installed, so if you purchase a basic Product key it will install basic, if you purchased an ultimate it will still install from the same DVD, but the product key tells it to install Ultimate.

Doing upgrades can / IS always a bit of a gamble - its always better to do a full install, having a system that may be unstable wont be fixed by doing an upgrade - bit like building a million dollar house on shaky/ unstable foundations.

OK, so if I want to restore everything to the original Vista Basic OEM version, (forget the upgrade), I can download a trial version of Vista, put in the original key that is stuck on the bottom of the lap-top and I'll have a good Vista Basic machine then?

Or does this apply here ? -

Unlike XP you cant do a repair install with the OEM version of Vista

765192 2009-04-16 00:21:00 Rather than download a disc, just borrow someone else's - most will work. :) pcuser42 (130)
765193 2009-04-16 04:06:00 Just off that boat. Yes a new install is the only way to do it. a dialogue box will tell you that all your old stuff is moved to a new folder within the new installation. But think of the advantages of a new install. Speed and a chance to fix all those old bugs. For a new boot loader try the "vista boot pro" I have it loading XP, Vista Ultimate and W7, it gets around the different boot protocols. XP has boot .ini Vista and 7 have BCDedit.exe and linux grub, I found that "vista boot pro" solves all the problems.
Just back it all up first!!!!!!!!:crying
PS Google vista boot pro .iso for a free download.

Basically YES - BUT as far as I know there is no official trial INSTALL version of Vista.

The trial on MS's site is designed to run on a virtual Machine software.

You would be better off as its been mentioned to get a DVD from someone and use the COA on the back of the laptop to do a fresh install of Vista basic.

keeping in mind you will need to have/Download all the drivers as well.

Edited: check the laptop to see if it has a recovery partition, if it does, then you can reinstall Vista from that, back to factory standard.

765195 2009-04-16 17:04:00 Why is it (at least on 2 newToshiba laptops) that using jellybean to find the product key, it's a different one from the label on the bottom? Which is the one to use if you do a reinstall (which I haven't)? Fishb8 (484)
765196 2009-04-16 19:46:00 I think because they are created from an image using a a volume licence from Toshiba at the factory, not sure though maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong gary67 (56)
765197 2009-04-16 22:45:00 I guess you could use either, they'd both be valid.

However, only the one on your sticker may actually activate.

If you reinstall the OS from the Sticker, most of the time it works fine and will activate, on the odd time it doesn't activate
and you have to phone MS and tell them you had to reinstall the OS using that COA on the Back, they give you a new set of 42 numbers to type in and away it goes.

IF you try to activate the factory installed Product key MS usually say its invalid - Without giving the technical side of it :nerd: - there is a hidden certificate that allows vendors ( HP, Dell etc) to use the One Key on numerous machines and all will be legal.

If you reformat the Hard drive, that certificate will vanish - and the product key wont activate.

I've heard you can copy the certificate into an Nlite install to prevent re-entering of the product key. Is that legal?
