764911 2009-04-14 08:06:00 Speedy. As a side issue, if the card isn't HD, but the proposed monitor is, what will be the impact of using that card with a HD monitor? Cheers. A Team (13613)
764912 2009-04-14 08:06:00 So what are you using now for that CRT?? Dont think thats got DVI on it

Nope not sure if CRTS have DVI, but most LCD's have DVI on them (altho, there are a few with only VGA on them). So check, before you buy

The graphics card has 2 of those DVI ports. There is an adapter that came with the graphics card that allows the CRT to be connected to the PC

If the card has only got DVI on it, it will still let you use it @ 1920 x 1080 (which is what this is set @ at the mo).

I see no diff between HDMI and DVI (since its the same resolution), the only diff is if I want sound (with DVI), I'll have to connect an audio cable from line out on the soundcard to line in on the monitor. With HDMI the cable carries video and sound.

I think (as long as the monitor is HDCP compliant), you can also use a DVI-HDMI adapter. But you'll probably still have to connect a cable for sound

764915 2009-04-14 08:19:00 Thanks, Speedy. All I want to know is whether a proposed monitor (ViewSonic VX2233wm) is compatible with the existing card (nVidia GeForce FX5200). Sound doesn't bother me as the monitor has in-built speakers ('cos that's what I want) and will have aseparate cable for that. Is there a downside to this combo? Sorry to hijack the post. Cheers. 764916 2009-04-14 08:29:00 Is that an AGP card??

If this is the same card (forums.nvidia.com) it may have probs going above 1680x1050. It may still work, but you'll probably have to leave it on 1280x1024

Altho, this may depend on the version / model of the FX5200 you've got

764917 2009-04-14 08:42:00 I have been running a AOC 2216vw on the FX5200 as a trial (to isolate a monitor fault) and it had much higher resolution (1650 x something) and it worked fine. The unit I'm contemplating is 1920 x 1080. How do I work out what version of card it is? A Team (13613)
764918 2009-04-14 09:00:00 Oh ok then Well, if youre using a 22' now, and its fine, it shouldnt be a prob.

I have no idea how you find out. But I think there's the FX5200, Ultra or / and something else. In the display settings, whats the highest resolution that card can go to?
Speedy Gonzales (78)
764919 2009-04-14 10:05:00 1680 x 1050 was the native resolution on the AOC 2216vw (in the display settings when that monitor was connected), which was the highest the scale went. A Team (13613)
