590644 2007-09-13 07:31:00 I'm with Speedy.

I wouldn't trust WMP to accurately determine genuine DVDs.

I think your just being OTT on it all.

When my computer player won't play the DVD, nor will my Phillips player play it,
there must be something wrong with the DVD or is my logic faulty. I am not interested in getting some other player to play these questionable DVD's.

What's OTT ??

Over The Top.
Your logic isn't faulty, have you got access to another dvd player? just for testing purposes.

590646 2007-09-13 07:42:00 I think this has already been asked, but what region are the DVD's?
If they are anything other than region 4, they will not play in a lot of DVD players, and most PC DVD drives.

I really don't think it is a DVD player problem. The Tech from phillips explained to me why my player won't play these DVD's because it is a copywrite infringement matter. Windows media player in my computer gives me the same message so I am logically concluding that there is something wrong with these particular DVD's.
My player plays lots of DVD's. It is only some of them that appear to have this copyright thing in them. Thank you all for your responses. What I really wanted to know is if anybody else has experienced this type of thing or am I a lone voice crying in the wilderness

590648 2007-09-13 08:53:00 I think it is the DVDs themselves, not your player or your software - but what IS causing that??

I mean, I can make a copy of any DVD that will play on anything, so if the ones you have are copies maybe the person making the copies doesn't know what they're doing.

What is the exact error given by both the player and WMP?

590649 2007-09-13 09:10:00 A DVD rental company wouldn't be stupid enough to be using copies. They might be using Disks that aren't Zone 4.

If that's the case and heaton's player won't play anything other than Zone 4 it's not a copyright issue.

From the new Copyright Bill before Parliament
"For example, regional zone access protections, which
prevent users from playing DVDs purchased from other zones, are
not linked to copyright infringement"

Zoning is a restrictive marketing tool. AFAIK there's no legal reason why a DVD player supplier can't make them Region Free if they can.

590650 2007-09-13 09:14:00 Try AnyDVD or DVD RegionFree and see if WMP then works, if so then I would say definitely a region issue - because you still haven't said if the DVDs that don't work are for a different region or not Agent_24 (57)
590651 2007-09-13 09:20:00 I am struggling to believe that anyone would blatantly hire out pirated movies (but there are some pretty stupid people out there and of course the store could also be oblivious to it as well), so I too doubt that it the discs. I would question the advice by the tech, what agenda does he have? I would explore the WMP error appearing. If windows uses the word 'illegal' it doesnt mean it literally.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and wonder.... by chance, did you mention to the tech that WMP displayed the "illegal" error, and added possibility of copyrighted material. Could it be that the tech drew on this (as he was not able to find any other explanation) and concluded that the assumption sounded feasible.

Of course you could be right. Why not post details here or if anyone is in your area here could PM you for details and conduct further tests. If there is something to it then there are often advertised huge rewards for alerting the authorities.

590652 2007-09-13 09:55:00 The Company where I have been hiring these DVD's is a well known DVD hiring Company and most of their DVD's play perfectly well on my player. It is the odd one that won't play and I don't think it is because my player is faulty. The tech at Phillips explained to me in great detail that programmed into their players is a programme that will detect any copyright infringement things and will not play the DVD. I have no reason to doubt his explanation.
My reason for asking if anyone else has had this problem is that if the Phillips Tech is right and the message from Windows player is right, then I think this is a serious matter. I will in confidence discuss this with any responsible person connected with the copyright infringement authority if they care to give me a phone number or e-mail address.

590653 2007-09-13 11:26:00 Sigh....
DO YOU KNOW WHAT REGION THE DVD's ARE???? (the ones that won't play)
If so, can you TELL us??
Also, it would help if we could be told the exact wording of the error message in WMP.
I doubt if it is to do with a DVD being illegal - although it could be if someone just copied the files straight from the DVD to the HDD using windows explorer... (which would make the copied DVD not play in a player or WMP)
