590056 2007-09-11 12:41:00 The law is very clear on found items. It is centuries old and has been well thrashed out in court.

If you find something, hand it in to the Police, and nobody claims it after three months then you may be able to take possession of it - but this is not the same as title. If the actual owner ever comes forward then you would have to relinquish possession to them.

Hi there, boat owner! If you are wondering where your boat is, please call me on xxx xxxx and you can have it back.

But that's just a guess

590059 2007-09-11 21:13:00 Well I know if you find an item, like a cellphone or something and hand it in to the Police, they keep it for 3 months and if no one claims it then you can have it.

If you are interested in getting something back if it isn't claimed make sure that they note that on the receipt. Some places seem to have a policy of ticking the box that means you don't want to have any claim without asking.

Agreed. The safest thing to do is tell the police you've found it and that you'd like to keep it if no owner is found after 3 months. It may be stolen in which case the police could have a description.
