However, a stat widely used when political parties are throwing charts & stats around is 'people drawing an unemployment benefit'. The mix between sickness/invalid and the unemployment stat can matter a lot depending on what spin is trying to be achieved. The fact that people are on s/i benefits does also affect the survey, which asks something along the lines of 'are you actively looking for work'. If you are on s/i, the answer is no. Lax standards for the other benefits thereby lower the unemployment figures whichever way you look at it. |

If they are wanting work or are looking for a job and are not employed then they are counted as being unemployed . If they are unemployed but not looking for work then they are not counted . It's got nothing to do with whether someone is on the dole or sickness benefit . Wrong . When you sign up for a benefit you may or may not be required to fill out the available for work form too . For instance one person receiving invalids may have a spouse who can work, that spouse is required to sign up for work . Those people are counted as unemployed . There is no survey . Whether or not you might want a job has nothing to do with it either . A long time ago I signed up for work at winz, I did not receive any benefit at all, it was just another "agency" as far as my intentions went . I would be counted as unemployed regardless as I had filled out the work form . My brother, who is on an invalids benefit, does not fill out the work form and therefore is not counted as unemplyed . Anyway I get sick of this whole benefit bashing stuff . Yes, there probably are a few who get benefits and obtain other money in illegal ways, but the real beneficiaries; A)Do not get enough to survivie on B)Would prefer to be getting real money from a real job Like my brother, there are people who cannot get work and have conditions where even if they tried, no-one will hire them . Why don't some of you try it before making judgements abou people in circumstances you know nothing about . |

It's the Household Labour Force Survey, and when you see "3.6%" or whatever quoted in the paper, it's from that survey, not people who signed up at winz. (It covers many statistics to do with employment, unemployment being just one of them). Tried to explain the difference in the post above. This has nothing to do with bashing anyone. |
