765572 2009-04-16 07:26:00 Hi All

I had that annoying problem that I'm sure many of you have seen whereby I couldn't delete a file from an external hard disk because the file was read-only.

I addressed this by re-doing the authorities, and it worked, but only for one of my two laptops - now the other one won't acknowledge it at all. Okay, my bad.

I also have issues with sharing between the two laptops, which are connected by a cross-over cable.

The thing is, my premises are physically secure and baddies from the outside are blocked with firewall/antivirus. So, I want everything to be available from everywhere. I want both the laptops to be able to browse each other without restriction and both to read/write to the external disk without restriction. Both laptops are running Windows XP Professional.

How can I simply achieve that? - i.e. no security on any of the devices.

If they are, I wouldnt share the whole hdd on either of them

Are you using a router or an ethernet hub?

If you are, you dont need a crossover cable

What firewall is installed?

765577 2009-04-16 23:41:00 Dunno, maybe. How do I check?

One computer is six years old and has has been extensively fooled around with.

765578 2009-04-17 00:06:00 Okay, nevermind on the secondary questions, so we don't get distracted. I'll restate my question:

I have an external hard drive. It has got share/permissions on it and the files on it.

Q: How do I "unsecure" all the files and return the disk to its original state of: Any computer can use it, and can read/delete/update/add files to it?

765579 2009-04-17 00:15:00 You'll probably have to take ownership (support.microsoft.com) of it, if youre planning on connecting it to more than 1 PC Speedy Gonzales (78)

Thank you. That did the trick.
