765081 2009-04-14 21:55:00 Just recently (last couple of days) my laptop (ASUS N50Vc running Vista Ultimate) has been locking up.

There is nothing obvious in the event viewer, except for 20 STOP messages with a similar flavour to this:

The entry <C:\WINDOWS\INF\WMIAPRPL\0009> in the hash map cannot be updated.

Context: Application, SystemIndex Catalog

Details:
A device attached to the system is not functioning. (0x8007001f)

Different paths, but all mention the "SystemIndex Catalog"

I have run a MalwareBytes scan - all clear. ZA is all up to date.

The Online Help isn't any.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I should start poking?

765082 2009-04-14 22:11:00 Your Search/Indexing has gotten all twisted and Lost.

Have a read of the second response here (forums.techarena.in) - or disable indexing by following the instructions From Here (www.mydigitallife.info) - reboot and see if it fixes the problem. Turn Indexing back on and it should auto rebuild the searches.

Many people say to leave indexing off - I personally find it brilliant and use it all the time to locate files, folders, open apps quickly and all the other crap I have scattered about that I cant remember where I put it.

765083 2009-04-14 23:26:00 Cheers wainuitech - disabled the Service. Looking good so far....

The Vista Windows Search is certainly a huge improvement over previous Windows Search apps, however, I think I'll stick with Google Desktop....

765084 2009-04-14 23:43:00 Google desktop could be the problem - personally I find it a system Hog, and no where near as good as Vista's inbuilt, I always remove it ( dells mostly) and find that fixes a lot of problems.

The two search's may be clashing - causing Vista to play sillies.

765085 2009-04-15 10:40:00 Anyone else use Ava Find? It is brilliant for finding files instantly and it seems to have a low overhead and no bad habits on my machine.

Yep, don't like Google Desktop.

765086 2009-04-15 11:55:00 I use Everything, quick and light. Might try Ava find later Blam (54)
765087 2009-04-15 21:51:00 'Everything' sure looks good. Must try it to see if it has an edge on Ava Find. linw (53)
765088 2009-04-15 22:00:00 Wow, it sure is quick at indexing! Just a few seconds. It also allows you to copy files etc which Ava doesn't do unless you buy the Pro version. linw (53)
765089 2009-04-15 23:11:00 I was pretty suprised at the speed too when I first tried it, best one I've seen so far
