590254 2007-09-12 03:54:00 One last chance to hear Bill Gates speak before he leaves the company he co-founded to head up his humanitarian efforts drew tens of thousands of Microsoft employees to the company's annual meeting at Safeco Field in Seattle late last week.

But garnering the most buzz, according to attendees blogging about the event, was a demo of Microsoft's revamp to its flagship web search engine, which is expected to be launched later this month. Additionally, CEO Steve Ballmer's rousing call for Microsoft to be "bold" and incorporate great design into its products -- the strategy that has lifted rival Apple -- made a big impression.

The reactions and comments from Micro serfs in the article are actually quite revealing.

590255 2007-09-12 07:49:00 Being bold and having good design isn't exactly only Apple's trademark you know. Might shock you but other companies do that as well. Now take a moment to digest that fact and then come back:)

Seen the HTC Touch, now THAT is a great design.

590256 2007-09-12 07:54:00 I was more intrigued by some of the under whelming remarks that were blogged by the Microserfs about the days festivities.

I agree that Apple isn't the only company out there that designs stuff, just about every company on the planet that manufactures and sells stuff has or uses a product design team during some stage of the design process.
Since it controls both, Apple has the ability to combine hardware design - both inside and out- with software and human UI design that a lot of tech companies are trying to adapt to including Microsoft. Most tech companies tend to be good at some parts of software design but not to good at integrating that with the hardware as is being shown by people's comments about the many brands of smart phone on the market where they may have all the office features (often more than the iPhone) but the hardware and software UI is not so easy or enjoyable to navigate through.
