Windows could not start because of an error in software.

I tried bootcfg /Rebuild
I tried Fixboot
I tried Chkdsk

I am going to try expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32

Any help is appreciated

Thanks x1000!

766438 2009-04-20 00:14:00 Did you make a seperate partition for Ubuntu?

Try the method here:]
support.microsoft.com

If that doesn't work you will need to perform a repair install.

766439 2009-04-20 00:19:00 This was exactly what I did:

Went into Recovery Console
Entered bootcfg /rebuild
It said an error occured
Entered fixboot
Nothing happened
Entered chkdsk
Detected and fixed 1 error
Again entered chkdsk, just to be sure
Then entered bootcfg /rebuild again
Succeeded

Now has 3 boot entries; they were: Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Microsoft Windows XP Professional & Ubuntu.

Tried both Microsoft Windows XP Professional entries, same error occured (Windows could not start because of an error in software.

Tried booting into Ubuntu, and failed!

Please h-e-l-p me!

766440 2009-04-20 00:22:00 Oh, and I forgot.

Tried expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32

Said there were no such file or directory (something like that)

766441 2009-04-20 00:27:00 Are you sure D is the write CD/DVD drive?
And did you install on the same partition as windows?

Or did you make a seperate partition?

766442 2009-04-20 00:44:00 I tried your suggestion blam6, and it half-worked

I was able to replace the hal.dll and ntoskrnl.exe, but the same thing happened.

Windows could not start because of an error in software.

766445 2009-04-20 01:12:00 So did you use wubi?

Or did you install it on a virtual machine?

Or did you just boot into the ubuntu cd, and install on the Windows Xp drive?

766446 2009-04-20 01:12:00 How exactly did you install it on the same partition as XP?

If you cant fix it, you'll probably have to reformat
