So the opposition wants to raise the age at which you can drive a motor vehicle. Currently it is 15 Years.

At the moment I work about 18 Km from where I reside. There is no public transport. I am, of course, somewhat over 15 years old.

I live in a rural area and if I have left school and want to take up work 18 KM away I would assume that it will take me a while to walk to my workplace. Probably take as much time or longer to walk back home as I would be more tired.

If I was 15 again then I think my Parents (caregivers) hopefully would drive me to work and pick me up after work.

But the Government lowered the drinking age.
And others want to raise the driving age.

It does not work for me.

591657 2007-09-16 08:33:00 yet another thread on this?!

look, it's parliaments favourite pastime to make ridiculous laws and spark controversy, and the media's job to fuel it.

see the other thread for my argument for raising the car age but not the bike age

edit: i should add that your scenario is the exact argument i was thinking of this morning when i heard a whole lot of bs about it on the radio

Right:
I don't give a damn about what age other countries have it at - especially not Australia or Britain. I don't care how close we are physically to Australia, we don't have to match their laws detail to detail. Do not forget that Britain has no restricted license and there is no minimum period for the learner's permit. Learning at 17 under a British system would be much the same as learning at 15 under the current New Zealand system.
Britain is not our Mother Country anymore. Our laws (apart from trading laws) have nothing to do with them.
And finally, I have no interest in how old Mr. Williamson's or whatever his name is's son is or will be when he learns to drive. He has no right to force his personal views down our throats.

591659 2007-09-23 05:47:00 Raise drinking age to 20 and driving age to 18. Allow 15 year olds to get a license to drive a Vespa only until they are 18. In those 3 years on their Vespa they might gain a bit of respect for others on the road.

Sober on 100cc with 2 wheels might be safer for them AND others on the road than drunk on up to 5000+cc with 4 wheels.

591661 2007-09-23 21:00:00 graduated licensing, (more so than we have now), restrict motor size ( they do it for motorcycles why not cars) untill full license. Driving skills course, which must be passed before moving on to next level (not pass by attendance defensive driving). This doesn't reduce your graduated licensing time. beama (111)
591662 2007-09-24 01:47:00 I am absolutely sure this labor commy government would raise the driving age if it got back into power.
If National did it they would lose the suport of the rural folk. In the country kids need to drive as sson as possible.
Maybe city kids should wait till age 18 and country kids could still get theirs at 15.

591663 2007-09-24 07:02:00 All that really is needed is zero tolerance on alcohol and driving . Screw all those guys who rekon 'they have only had a couple', zero tolerance . No excuses just take licenses straight away . Impound the cars .

Sick of all the pussy footing, i think everyone forgets driving is a priviledge(sp?) not a rite .

As for the age, I think 16/17 is a reasonable age to start .

engine limits mean very little, even for bikes - a 250cc cbr will outperform any boy racer car out there, and bike limits don't account for undocumented modifications to increase engine capacity (and overpowered cars are no where near as dodgy as a learner on a 600cc sportbike, but a 600cc tourer would be no problem), and for cars turbo's would throw all that out (and you can't ban turbo's cause most work vans are turbo diesel and again you'll be making young school leavers unemployable)

basically, just increase the fine for speeding and it'll achieve the same thing - that is, very little . impounds work better .

May I ask how you would enforce the law?
So assuming I live in a rural area and get my full drivers licence at age 15. Then I move to an urban area at age 15 and three months.

Should I now hand in my rural licence?

OK tedheath, For whom will you vote for next general election and why?

I will not be voting National as I have not heard about what they have in the way of policy at this point. Last time I voted for National was when Muldoon was about.

I will definitely vote but I want to hear what the alternative is.

Then we have MMP which is the only reason we currently have a government.
This because parties got together.

Go vote anyway. Better to do so than not.
