591686 2007-10-31 07:48:00 Oh... Yeah, I was home-schooled. Never went over mathematics stuff very much (in fact hardly at all). Don't blame me, it's the governments fault! ubergeek85 (131)
591687 2007-10-31 09:58:00 Limit 15-18 year olds to under 1200cc. Eg a Toyota Echo, Ford Fiesta sizes etc. With no mods like wheel/exhaust/suspension etc.

put the limit at something reasonable like 1400cc or maybe 1600cc non turbo so kids can still drive starlets and the like, otherwise it will be too hard to find a car and people will feel forced to break the rules. it's hard enough to find a manual car as it is!

and there's nothing wrong with putting 18" chrome mags on your lowered car with a 4" muffler tip. if they want to make themselves look like a tosser then why not let them? they're still driving a piece of **** car, and the pipe leading up to their muffler is still only 1"

although i think you shouldn't be able to take out loans at 20% interest to pay for said useless crap on their $500 car

591688 2007-10-31 10:00:00 I have to point this out...
5000cc? Have you got a small train engine in your car? Five cubic metres of water weighs five tons, five cubic metres of metal, probably more. If I had a car with a 5000cc engine in it... I'd be dead (I'm 16, so one of the highest-risk age groups).

ignoring your amusing (yet worrying) unit conversion, i might point out that that 5000cc is empty space, surrounded by a sleeve of steel, oil and coolantr;), and i think the space required in the engine bay for 5 cubic metres would be much more of an issue for a normal sized car:lol:

I think this sounds like the best idea.

I don’t see a problem with bigger wheels (and tyres) and lowered cars, if its all done legally, its actually safer - bigger tires make for better grip and handling, lower cars steer better.
If they want big exhaust tips they can deal with the fines the revenue gatherers in blue will dish out.
I think until 18 there should be a 1600cc naturally aspirated limit on cars, I've seen a guy who looked 16 in an Evo 6! I'm sure the loan companies wouldn’t opt for the law though.

591690 2007-11-01 20:35:00 1600cc limit is fairly useless. that still gives them 160+ hoursepower in a lightweight car to drive (250km/h+) and thats without adding a turbo.

make them drive diesels !

education is the key.

bigger tyes and lowered suspension do not always mean a better handling car. most young drivers wouldn't know what its like to drive a car that breaks grip as opposed to slide. eg you make a car grip extremely well and they will drive it to the limit without even realising it. the day they go over that limit they lose all grip and will be going at higher speed than normal, so there is no way they can recover it. not that they will even know how to recover from a slide.
they are better off the learn how to drive a poor handling car and learn to how recover from slides etc.

That sort of performance from a non-turbo 1600 would probably be too expensive for a teenager .

Big tyres in the wet can aquaplane sooner on small cars .

How many accidents have been caused because stupidly lowered cars are always slowing down to drive over small bumps :D

actually no. very cheap. biggest problem is finding one that hasn't been thrashed out allready.

591693 2007-11-01 23:58:00 I suppose you're right about the speed of a 1600 - but the thing is acceleration, not nessacarily top speed. Its getting to 120 kmph down a small street in the matter of seconds which is the problem, not the ability to go 200 when it takes a massive stretch of road to do so.
Defensive driving courses should be mandatory aswell.

perhaps they could have an additional list of models which are prohibited.

and if you're driving you're dad's v8 without him in the passenger seat, either you get the usual fine and car gets impounded, or you get the usual fine plus a charge for car theft. that way problem parents might get on board

591695 2007-11-02 00:06:00 Maybe all young drivers should drive responsibly and within the terms of their licences then maybe we "could" leave the age at 15.

But not when they do ueys in my road at 4pm in the afternoon when there are lots of people round ! And not when they race up my road and cut corners in the daytime.

I don't mind them killing them selves, but not some poor innocent person !
