591082 2007-09-16 01:38:00 Cant see a biggy really, the price of crude oil is going to go up and up.
Then alternatives will become the same price and problem solved.
Until it really hurts in the pocket to fill up people will use their cars without a thought. I dont have a problem if petrol goes to $3 a litre I would make my own ethanol or bio diesel from vegetable oil.
There arent really problems with oil shortages only solutions.

There is a problem when the price goes up very high very suddenly. People, industry and whole countries cannot adapt quickly enough.

The way that things work right now, independent estimates of remaining oil reserves is not available. No-one really knows how much is left. That means a gradual weening off the stuff is not possible. We all better hope that there is some sort of advanced warning (although you'd think that there is plenty warning around enough already), and that someone somewhere has been preparing us all for it.

Nuclear power plants take too long to build. Even longer for people to accept. I'd say it is at least 20 years away, if at all. NZ is not geologically stable as well.

Wind, solar, biofuels cannot supply us all. They also will take some time, but are probably easier and quicker to get going than nuclear.

By the way, whatever happened to CNG and LPG from the offshore gas fields (remember Maui?). I last heard that the gas was poor quality, but was useable.

tedheathI can't see pricing changing peoples habits in a hurry - look at cigarette pricing. OK, it's a luxury item (albeit an addictive and harmful one), but because pricing has gone up slowly over a long period of time, people have adjusted. It's a bit like the story of the frog in the pot of water being slowly brought to the boil - he doesn't notice it until it's too late.

PS. I managed to fill up in Dairy Flat today at $1.43 per litre!!!! It's $1.63 everywhere else in Orcland at the moment... :p
