591071 2007-09-15 08:05:00 Theres plenty of oil out there. It's just scaremongering. The oil company's are making a killing out of it!! :( :( :angry

My personal opinion, anyway. If we were really running out of oil, there would be a lot more hybrid/hydrogen cars around. No money in it for the oil company's with those, but if we haven't got any oil, no ones got a choice!! Meh. Theres oil out there.

The price of oil is based on supply, not on what is left in the ground. You cannot tell the amount of oil left in the ground from the current price.

Read about the phenomenon of Peak Oil and what many industry insiders and petro-geologists think is the basis behind it. But the summary is this:

1. Opec members agree to regulate supply to keep the price high. This is why the Opec cartel was originally set up. The other factor affecting the price is uncertainty over the military conflicts in the Middle East.

2. If supply is regulated, Opec must issue producers with quotas. These quotas naturally are based on existing reserves. I.e., the more reserves an oil-producing country claims, the bigger its quota. Saudi Arabia, and reported all other members of Opec, refuse to have their oil reserves independently proven, probably because it might affect their quotas.

3. The bigger the quotas, the greater the income. This leads oil producers to over-estimate their reserves.

4. People, the auto-industry, whole countries believe these reserve figures, and make no attempt to seek viable alternatives.

It will always be to Opec members advantage to over-estimate their reserves right to the bitter end. In fact, it is has been claimned by some conspiracy-theorists that this is the real reason of the Iraq invasion. The US fears being strangulated by Opec, and is seeking control, or at least some influence by getting into Iraq.

591072 2007-09-15 09:05:00 2: i plan to be building it this summer using a rolling fxr150 chassis. i just don't have the time during the uni semester to even get some drawings ready

Or you could invest in one of these (www.treehugger.com)... But probably not as much fun as building your own.

Another 'let the market decide what is environmentally friendly and sustainable' article

Think I said the skeptics would keep waffling on about solar cycles and cosmic rays

591074 2007-09-15 11:37:00 yeah, i dont really care about global warming in the sense that it'll only delay the next ice age:lol:

no, seriously, i don't consider global warming part of my pro-electric argument because so many of you out there seem to beleive that it isn't happening (which is both controversial and trivial) and forget the rest of the argument

personally, i think carbon trading is a joke, and little NZ cutting emmissions isn't going to make any difference looking at global emmissions. also, nuclear would be good if we can sustain it long term, but we would be dependant on imported fuel, whereas coal, geothermal etc etc avoid this

i just think that sitting on our hands watching oil dry up is asking for future disaster - if opec etc want to screw us over why let them. we dont NEED oil for transport, and it is hideously expensive

why do they have to make them so ugly?

if i was to buy one i'd buy this (www.electricmotorsport.com) (currently looks like i'm buying a motor and controller off these guys too)

591076 2007-09-15 11:52:00 Fair enough but I saw the word 'facts' not 'claims'

As it happens, I consider nuclear energy unsustainable, environmentally unfriendly, and an option of last resort - if that has anything to do with ur outlook :)
