2007-09-14 09:17:00 | Don't do it said Frank Stark of the NZ Film Archive on RadioNZ Nine to Noon yesterday. (The interview is available for download). He thinks, at present, VHS tape is more stable than DVD. His biggest tip was to buy another VHS machine now against the future when they will no longer be available. He didn't rule out making DVD copies but keep the original and/or use remote storage for a copy file. He did mention dual format machines that will make a DVD copy from VHS at the press of a button. Anybody got any experience/recommendations. I would like to cover all the options: make copies, view a VHS original, make a file copy. Any comments? Martynz

2007-09-14 10:52:00 | I found these on the Bond and Bond website, check out the other big shops as they may have better prices. Panasonic DVD/VCR Combination Player Model: NV-VP60GN-S $299.99 Panasonic DVD/VCR Recorder Model: DMRES35 $549.99 Samsung DVD-VR355 Samsung Single DVD recorder & VCR combo with HDMi Model: DVD-VR355 $469.99 I am also looking at getting a combo vhs/dvd player for the same reasons as you,but for a present for my Dad for Christmas:) but will buy one now before they all go as I don't think the shops will want to hang onto these for long as it is older technology and they will want to clear their shelves for new stuff. The Samsung has HDMI so that would help with futuer upgrades with tv/stereo etc.

He is giving a copy to all his children so there are 4 copies and the original VHS plus any extras he is doing that I don't know about. Should be no problems with backups if any of the DVDs have a problem playing in the future. |

2007-09-14 21:09:00 | You could do what my dad is doing. He is transfering all home videos from VHS to DVD using a Pioneer HDD DVD Recorder. Our video player has packed a sad so I'm looking to buy another so as to be able to play all our video tapes. Does that Pioneer recorder have a video player as well, ie a combo machine? What is the quality of the results like for the copies? Does anyone know how the quality compares for tapes copied onto DVDs via DVD/VHS combo machines as opposed to copying via PC then transferring to DVD?

2007-09-14 22:01:00 | I have a Panasonic VCR/DVD Player I fed any of my important VHS Tapes in to my MiniDV camera connected to the Combo unit since my DVD is only a player not a recorder, then edited them and burned them on the PC, and of course still retaining the VHS tapes. My Tapes are kept in a dark dry place and appear to be retaining the quality at this stage, 3 of them 25 years old since they are of our wedding. Originally filmed on one of those huge Video Cameras that came complete with a huge backpack for the batteries. I do have concerns about loosing the footage over time but equally the same goes for all my Camera Tapes and Film Camera negatives and slides. There is already information out there that CD's and DVD's can loose their information over time, particularly if not stored correctly.

2007-09-16 10:27:00 | I have just purchased a Panasonic DMR-ES35V which is a VHS and DVD Recorder. It will copy VHS to DVD's. We have many VHS tapes of our family going back 20 years and although they do not seem to have degraded I was keen to get them copied to a more up to date format. I copied 2 tapes today and they came out perfect. They were filmed using one of the large Panasonic 'on the shoulder' cameras which recorded straight to the VHS tape I am copying. I have also got quite a few mini VHS tapes to copy and can feed these to the DVD recorder with a cable connection. The VHS recorder part of this machine will probably not get a lot of use so will last for quite some time to play the tapes again if required
