767791 2009-04-23 09:36:00 Hello,

My current ISP is xnet, and I want to change.

I have naked DSL with xnet and my phone is a VOIP with xnet.

My question is: how easy/difficult is it to change ISP's when you are on naked DSL?

How much internet outage will there be?
How much VOIP outage will there be?

What else goes wrong?

Thanks,

Donald

767792 2009-04-23 09:42:00 Dunno about the changing ISP thing. I would think VOIP and Internet will be on at the same time, I think when I joined Xnet, I was on at the same day from application (telephone via credit card).

I will note that Xnet naked ADSL might be the best, the others are not that great in terms of services vs price. AFAIK there are no real naked ADSL that not sell you VOIP. Ie., BB only and no phone and no VOIP. The only exception is Telstraclear on Cable (not ADSL) if you spend $49.95 a month for Internet.

On the other hand, if no VOIP with ADSL, you get a landline which can cost more than VOIP.

767793 2009-04-23 11:51:00 No one can predict how much outage will be. We're on the Fusion plan from Xnet which is all VoIP and it went down a fair bit when we joined up last year but its been a lot better. If you have a health condition or always need to be contactable, I would not go on a VoIP plan. beeswax34 (63)
767794 2009-04-23 14:05:00 Xnets VoIP service blows ...
Basically they're completely separate, the VoIP number porting and the ADSL. 100% separate.

Here's what you want to happen:
Port your number away from VFX (To whoever else you choose -- 2talk.co.nz are good)
It'll take approx 5 working days from the time you've notified them. The porting process generally takes approx 30 mins -> 4 hours. You can specify an "ideal" time, such as the morning of next tuesday, provided its at least 5 working days away.

Once you've done that, THEN look at changing your ISP (Im guessing to Orcon? Not many ISPs do Naked DSL).

Nomad, You'd be surprised, I would actually consider Xnet to be one of the worst in terms of service, and price, and support ...

Now, going from Naked DSL & VoIP to a regular landline with ADSL is a whole different story ... ;)

Basically the best way to minimize downtime is get a NEW line rolled out to your house with your new phone provider. Get the number ported. Get ADSL enabled on it, then cancel your old line.
If you get ADSL on the line, then port your number, ADSL will get cut off.

beeswax34, out of curiosity, how often does Xnet's VFX go down for you?

767795 2009-04-24 03:46:00 I dont think any other company does naked DSL at all?
Im on VSX and i havent had any downtime, unless the internet goes out which has happened a couple times for a short peroid of time.

767796 2009-04-24 04:28:00 pantera989, Yes, Orcon do, and there are some others such as Kiwilink who simply resell Xnet.

I think you mean VFX, which is their VoIP Calling service. Its had more than its fair share of outages and issues, but most "home-use" people probably dont pick up on them because they're not on the phone enough during the business day.

767797 2009-04-24 05:25:00 Yeah we only use the phone a few times a week so your proberly right. pantera989 (14533)
767798 2009-04-24 06:27:00 Hey Chill - is there really a naked adsl service? Ie., that we pay just for BB and no phone charge and no extra charge for voip? I mean could one get a naked adsl for $30 a month? Say on a 256k connection. Nomad (952)
767799 2009-04-24 07:16:00 Nah Orcon dont do 256k connections, just full line speed up and down. Plans include 15GB. Chilling_Silence (9)
767800 2009-04-24 07:23:00 That's eighty bucks a month :crying

I only use 3-4GB a month.
But is $80 a month pretty much what BB cost alone for those specifications at other providers? Ie., internet + phone package minus the telephoen cost.

Or is this ADSL2+ is it only avaible to Auckland at this time??
