766794 2009-04-21 09:42:00 I'm using Xtra Broadband and i keep getting frequent internet disconnections (all the lights except for the power on the router goes out) I've been on Xtra Go plan since 2005 and i've never had this problem before.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I'm capped, but i don't go to sites or play games that use up a lot of data.

edit: It was disconnecting all through last night aswell at around 6-9pm. At 10pm the internet was fairly stable with only a few disconnects.

766795 2009-04-21 10:02:00 You may need to update the firmware on the router.

What router and modem are you using?

Realtek RTL 8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC

I tried going to the the D-link site for the firmware upgrade but it says i need to contact telecom first?

766797 2009-04-21 10:44:00 That is a modem.

Ring telecom and ask them for a free new modem.

Otherwise it may be a problem in your area.

Try updating you NIC drivers also

766798 2009-04-21 12:28:00 Good lord I didnt know people still had those.

Long story short, as blam6 mentioned it's more than likely the modem.

Telecom shipped those DSL-302g's by the truckload and they're super cheap & super-nasty! Again, as blam6 mentioned when you ring Telecom, tell them of your issue, they should give you the latest one that they advertise in their TV ads where the guy kicks down the walls inside the house. They're not the top of the line modems, but they're pretty darn decent for free, and they'll no doubt resolve your disconnect issues, potentially increasing your speed a little also (Almost everybody I know has had better speeds by changing from the DSL-320g to the new modem -- but those results are totally unofficial of course).

Good luck :D

766800 2009-04-21 22:34:00 I rang them today for a new modem and told them i received my modem in 2005 and its acting up now. They said your 'disconnection rate isn't as frequent as you've explained', i'm not sure thats true because i disconnect a minute after i get my connectivity back during night time :stare:. Then they told me to enter my username and password because it was set to default before they could help me in the future. Cheezels (14809)
766801 2009-04-21 23:14:00 I gave them another call and theyre going to send me a new modem :) Cheezels (14809)
766802 2009-04-21 23:39:00 On the other hand I came across one the other day, they sent a new modem, no difference (cause its always the modem, right?), finally managed to get them to send a tech out and yes it was the connection at the gate. pctek (84)
766803 2009-04-22 01:27:00 A free modem is probably the easiest place to start though, *especially* when its free ;) Chilling_Silence (9)
