593835 2007-09-22 02:28:00 Here. (www.news.com)

While Microsoft is still pushing Vista hard, the company is quietly allowing PC makers to offer a "downgrade" option to buyers that get machines with the new operating system but want to switch to Windows XP.

593837 2007-09-22 04:46:00 And people are still expecting Vienna to be....better...?  riiight.:p With the amount of legacy code that it will be carrying it will probably be worse than Vista. winmacguy (3367)

Coming from a Macboy that statement is understandable. Apple are not too good at providing backward compatability with their operating systems - so Apple freaks have learned not to care.

But how else can you build backward compatability into your OS without including "legacy" code?

I'm interested in your answer to this question, winmacguy...

Apple did put compatibility in the first three versions of OSX so you could run os9 applications, they have dropped in Tiger the latest current version, osx is now 7 years old .
I also thought xp had a compatibility mode as well? for running 98 only programs . If that is the case there would be no reason to use legacy code in a new os, only needing it in a visualisation mode . Compatibility mode in the mac was called classic, which essentially was another OS running in a program, much like virtualpc, and that folks is how you build backward compatability into your OS without including "legacy" code?

Actually the "argument" part was instigated by Dean F relating to my comment about the proposed OS "Vienna" being not much better performance wise than Vista (which not many people seem to want) due to the amount of legacy code it will have to support - which is entirely true. No mention was made about Macs which, as plod pointed out, had support (early versions of OS X) by dual booting with OS9 "Classic" which Apple then phased out once developers and users had been moved on board.

Or are you and I going to have an argument about who started the argument about mac vs pc argument:waughh:
Though I do believe I answered Deane f question without an argument. Do you think this thread is going to turn into another big argument
