593736 2007-09-21 11:15:00 just saw a bit on the news about kids being rescued from the waipu caves.

the odd thing here is WHY would they be taken caving in a cave that floods when its rainning? wether forecast even showed a front coming across.

one wonders at the IQ level of the teachers etc. they seriously need a good kick up the @#$%.

i'm not impressed :horrified

Can't remember what program it was on this week (Close Up?) but there was a story about two mothers whose special needs sons drowned on a school trip seven or eight years ago.

The class of 15? (can't remember exact number, wasn't that many though) special needs children were taken to a deep swimming hole by a sole female teacher. When one of them got stuck on the other side of the bank he was told to just swim back across again. He didn't want to and when he did he got into trouble. His mate jumped in to help him and they both drowned.

The whole tragedy of the event is that 100m further down the river the water was only knee deep and they could have walked across. They were not told to do this and if they had they would still be alive today.

The IQ level of some teachers is questionable alright.

593739 2007-09-21 22:05:00 Perhaps they had sought advice from the police? R2x1 (4628)
593740 2007-09-22 07:38:00 If they were special needs kids they probaly wouldnt have listened to someone saying swim downstream.
Stop knocking teachers for trying to do their best looking after retarded people. Bull**** about a front coming and going into a cave no one can predict the weather in this country. Just remember **** happens, people die everyones go to die sooner or later.

It's a damn good thing that you aren't a teacher.

There was no need for the child or children to SWIM downstream to cross the river. The boy that drowned could have walked on the riverbank no more than 100m up or downstream to where it was shallower then WADED across the river in water no deeper than his knees but the teacher did not instruct him to do this.

593742 2007-09-23 07:41:00 to die for your country is heoric, to die because the teacher/boss couldn't be bothered looking at the weather map is pathetic. tweak'e (69)
593743 2007-09-23 08:30:00 perhaps it's time to order some more cotton wool.
I have a go at the wife all the time for being over protected of the children. kids need to bleed a bit to toughen them up. 20 years ago those teenagers in the cave would have thought that was the best experience they have had in there lives

593744 2007-09-23 08:46:00 My understanding was that the Waipu students were guided by a "caving expert" not a teacher from their school. I wouldn't be in a rush to malign their teacher(s) unless you are sure of your facts.

593745 2007-09-23 09:04:00 sorry i'm not 100% on details, media never tell the whole story at the best of times. i thought they got rescued by a caving expert who had just come out of the caves. tweak'e (69)
