593427 2007-09-21 06:53:00 I am looking at getting an air compresser, however I don't really know anything about them.

I need it to fill tyres up to 250 PSI, and the tyres are large and tractor sized.

I have been into a couple of retailers, but the people who worked there didn't really know anything about them. I suppose you can't expect much for people being paid $10 per hour. Is anyone who knows something about air compressors able to recommend a brand and size that will pumb 250PSI? They don't seem to shown the ratings in PSI. THey seem to be avavliable in sizes 2hp, 2.5 hp and 3 hp, but I don't know which size is suitable.

I also want one that is reasonable quality. I guess it is a case of you pay for what you get, so I do want something that is going to last and be reliable.

I am in the hutt valley. There are heaps of places such as bunnings, supercheap, warehouse, mitre 10, supercheap, that sell them, but to me they all look the same. I have seen some with copper pipes but don't know whther they are better quality than the aluminium piped ones.

The power tool centre on the old hutt road should be able to help. Just down the road from supercheap

593431 2007-09-21 08:34:00 a few tool places have them.

you can forget most of the cheap ones at supercheap, mitre10 etc. they generally struggle with 100psi+. your after a decent pully driven multistage one.

593432 2007-09-21 08:57:00 250psi? That is definitely NOT a home handyman job. Is there a tyre place near you go & ask them. They will have professional gear. As an ex Electrician I did a lot of work with compressors. There will be a point where they will be fitted with 3 Phase motors & all the gear that goes with that.
I never came across 250psi tho' !!! You don't mean K Pascalls do you? PJ

593433 2007-09-21 09:39:00 250 PSI does sound kind of high. I've pumped up a tractor tyre with my Mitre 10 2.5hp compressor. Just a cheapie but it still works after 5 years - doesn't get much use in truth. Winston001 (3612)
593434 2007-09-21 09:53:00 Are you sure a tractor tyre or any tyre is 250 pisi?
The only thing I have ever worked on with that pressure was the tyres on the A4 ****hawk.
Probaly the best thing you do is get a scuba bottle and an old dive regulator from tm.
Take a hose from the 1st stage of the reg (the bit that goes on the bottle) to a regulator beware a 180 psi plus regulator is going to be expensive.
If you dont really need 250 psi get an el cheapo compressor they are fine. Just dont let them run for anymore than 15 minutes continously they get too hot.

don't forget tho that some tire places also fill dive bottles....where talking 3000-4000psi.

i'm not sure on tractor tire pressure but even on low pressure you need an air pump that will pump big volume. tractor tires take a long time to fill. i wouldn't want to try doing a few truck tires with a handyman compressor. they are not great, barely enough for nail guns etc.

593436 2007-09-21 10:38:00 I believe there was a restriction of 70 psi max. for tyres used in built up areas, even that is capable of serious mischief if things go awry, and 250 lb in^2 is going to require a lot of compressor. 17 Bar is a bit of a frightening thing for rubber bags to hold. The air out of that compressor is going to need some serious cooling. R2x1 (4628)
