| 592449 | 2007-09-18 23:01:00 | Hi all, I am having a cabinet made for a clients comms and IT requirements. The servers and UPS boxes are in the lower chamber and I was thinking about get a fan to exhaust air out. Now an ordinary kitchen extractor fan would be the business if they weren't so damn loud. A 200mm cooling fan would be a better option, though not sure how I would go about powering it. Suggestions |

These days you can get all kinds of fans and ducting in Mitre 10, you can get a kit for less than $100 (yeah $99.95). The source of the air need not be that cold but it should be dry. The filter I used was a 10 ltr paint drum, the plastic type, filled loosely with Dacron fibre but wool or polypropylene batts would be just as good. I drilled 10mm holes in the body of the container and fed the fan through ducting exiting the lid of the drum. The unit was powered by running a cable from a switch in the cabinet taped to the ducting down to the fan and the whole cabinet just plugged into the wall socket and Incorporated a ups in the cabinet. Worked a treat and was totally silent in the office with the fan and filter located in the basement. |
