592416 2007-09-18 10:28:00 {Excuse some of the funny spellings - Amerenglish, combined with old-fashioned Imperial measurements . . . :groan: :D }

1 . The average human body comprises enough fat to make seven bars of soap, enough iron to make a medium sized nail, enough potassium to explode a toy cannon, enough lime to whitewash a small chicken coop, enough sugar to fill a jam jar, and enough sulfur to rid a dog of fleas .

2 . A complete skeleton is worth between $5,000 and $7,500 to a medical student; your skull alone would fetch only about $450 .

3 . Your mouth produces about one quart of saliva per day .

4 . Demodex folliculorum has eight stumpy legs and a tail, is about a third of a millimeter long, and loves nothing more than to recline in the warm, oily pits of your hair follicles . Most adults have this mite, usually on the head, but especially in eyelashes . And often, they're in nipples .

5 . You have approximately 4,000 wax glands in each ear .

6 . The average adult stool weighs about 4 ounces . And half of the bulk of your feces comprises the dead bodies of bacteria that live inside your intestines .

7 . The average male foot exudes half a pint of sweat each day .

8 . If it weren't for the slimy mucous that clings to and lines the walls of your gut, your stomach would readily digest itself .

9 . The average person will pass about 11,000 gallons of urine in a lifetime .

10 . A man weighing 200 lbs . would provide enough meat to feed 100 cannibals in one sitting .

592417 2007-09-18 10:44:00 It really makes the case for killing a man, cooking and eating him (thus feeding you three meals a day for a month) and selling his skeleton on Trade Me. It's not really a body part...

I mean, really, it makes good economic sense...

Without even costing out the meat (Price as steak, presumably? Or maybe veal, if a young one?), I fear the skeleton would let your business plan down, George?

NZ medical students don't buy their own. That's obviously an overseas price.
So your TradeMe expectations are highly inflated.

(Not to mention inconvenient bits of legislation about what you can & can't do with body parts here)

I'm sure worse things than human have been sold as steak.

592420 2007-09-18 16:31:00 . . . and the intestinal parasites weren't even mentioned . . . nor the amount of methane gas generated in the alimentary canal and can you actually run a small households lights on it?

How much mucus does the average human generate?
How many liters of tears in a lifetime? (male vs female)
Why are feces brown?

I'm not too sure a 200lb man would dress out with that much meat anyway .

You guys should know . . . how much edible meat is there in a 200lb sheep?

< Mmmmm . . sheep meat! Homer (SurferJoe) Simpson >

BTW: bought a NZ leg of lamb yesterday at our special butcher shop in town . It's hard to get here, but I prefer it over the pasty lamb we have here .

Its brown coloration comes from a combination of bile and bilirubin, which comes from dead red blood cells. n newborn babies, fecal matter is initially yellow/green after the meconium. This coloration comes from the presence of bile alone. In time, as the body starts expelling bilirubin from dead red blood cells, it acquires its familiar brown appearance, unless the baby is breast feeding.

I just knew I shouldn't read this thread before breakfast. Thanks Pctek and SJ and others who have given me something to 'ponder' today.

Methane production figures don't surprise me - the gummint were trying to tax farmers here for animal methane production not so long ago, so there must be a bob or two in it . . .

Mucus? Well, judging by the cold I am just recovering from, I would hazard a guess at a truckload!!! Per year!

200lb sheep = 90kg animal . That's a fat one! Usually around 85kg, but the amount of meat would depend on the breed of sheep . Some are meat-bearing, some wool-bearing and some are bred for both .

Yes NZ lamb is a delicacy - unfortunately for most of us "stay-at-homes", the bulk of the good stuff is exported . You really have to have relatives who are farmers so you can occassionally get a home-kill beast to put in the freezer . . . .
